Tuesday?s area sports briefs

Conway and West Florence put a literal meaning to the term ?down to the wire? on Tuesday night.

Tied at 52, Tre?von Longs was fouled with one second left and hit the second of two free throws to lift the Tigers to 53-52 win over West Florence.

Tigers coach Mike Hopkins admitted the team started off slow.

?Well we started out sluggish, but we picked it up luckily,? Hopkins said. ?Road games are always tough, and we had to overcome a lot. We overcame foul trouble, multiple different types of lineups. Good win.?

The Tigers and Knights traded baskets most of the game, leading to a dramatic finish.

?I told my guys, ?stuff?s going to happen, but we?ve got to keep playing,? Hopkins said.

?I thought we did a good job overall, we just kept chipping away at it,? Hopkins continued. ?We lost the lead, but luckily we got the last shot when Tre?von [Longs] got fouled with one second on the clock. We?ve practiced free throws every day, and just worked at it and worked at it. Fortunately for us he had to shoot two because he missed the first, but he hit that second one and that was it.?
