Fire guts Bangladesh garment factory, six killed

DHAKA (Reuters) - Fire raced through a small garment factory in the Bangladesh capital on Saturday, killing at least six employees and injuring 10, firefighters and witnesses said, two months after the country's worst factory blaze killed 112 workers.

Fire service officials said the fire at Smart Fashions, housed in the upper floor of a two-storey building in the suburb of Mohammadpur, appeared to start in a tire repair and welding shop downstairs. But the exact cause was still to be determined.

Firefighters and police combed the building after the blaze was brought under control and pulled out six bodies.

"Everything inside the factory has been gutted," a Reuters photographer said.

A fire at Tazreen Fashions Limited in a Dhaka suburb in November killed 112 workers and injured at least 150, a blaze that focused world attention on poor safety standards in the country's garment sector.

Working conditions at Bangladeshi factories are notoriously poor, with little enforcement of safety laws. Overcrowding and locked fire doors are common.

Bangladesh has about 4,500 garment factories and is the world's biggest exporter of clothing after China, with garments making up 80 percent of its $24 billion annual exports.

Officials in the industry have demanded quick implementation of recommendations to improve standards in a report that concluded the Tazreen blaze was the result of both sabotage and negligence.

Western clothing brands, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc, have announced tougher measures to ensure safety standards are upheld.

(AP) ? Police on Saturday arrested a man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer and critically wounding two sheriff's deputies after allegedly setting fire to a mobile home in south Louisiana, where an elderly man's body was found.

A Chitimacha tribal officer was pronounced dead at the scene of the shootings in Charenton, while two St. Mary Parish sheriff's deputies were critically wounded and taken to local hospitals, said Louisiana State Police Trooper Stephen Hammons.

Hammons said the officers were responding to a report of an armed man walking down a road near the Cypress Bayou Casino when Wilbert Thibodeaux, 48, of Charenton allegedly shot them.

"Thibodeaux fired at the Chitimacha Officer, fatally wounding him," state police said in a news release. "As two St. Mary Deputies, who were in the same car, arrived at the scene Thibodeaux fired multiple shots hitting the deputies. During the encounter, Thibodeaux was shot."

Investigators found the burned remains of a man after extinguishing a fire at a mobile home that Thibodeaux is suspected of setting before the officers confronted him, Hammons said.

Police identified the deceased man in the mobile home as Eddie Lyons, 78, of Charenton. "Detectives suspect Lyons was shot by Thibodeaux before the fire," state police said in a news release.

Thibodeaux was treated at a hospital for a gunshot wound that wasn't considered life-threatening and released, according to Hammons, who said investigators were questioning him Saturday evening. Charges against him are pending.

The state Fire Marshal's office is investigating the fire.

"Today is a difficult day for our partners in St. Mary Parish," Col. Mike Edmonson, the State Police superintendent, said in a statement. "My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies and the officer's families tonight. I know the coming days and weeks will be difficult ones for the men and women of the Chitimacha Police Department and the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. We will assist their agencies in any way we can during these trying times."

The casino is run by the Chitimacha Tribe of Louisiana and is less than a quarter-mile from the scene of the shootings. Hammons said the shootings occurred near but not on tribal land.

"Everybody is just in shock. It's small-town America," said Jacqueline Junca, the tribe's secretary and treasurer.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the officers. Authorities said they will do so at a Monday news conference.

Tribe councilman Toby Darden said the slain officer was married and had two grown children, but he declined to give his name.

"He's a real great guy. Extremely dedicated to his job. Very brave," Darden said.

He was one of seven full-time officers who patrol a 260-acre reservation that has roughly 150 homes, a grocery store, a small school and government offices.

"Everybody knows the officers personally," Darden said. "It's devastating."

Junca said the tribe has around 1,200 members, roughly half of whom live on the reservation.

Access to and from the casino was restricted for roughly 90 minutes as a precautionary measure while police responded to the shooting, said casino spokeswoman Nancy Herrington. Charenton is located about 45 miles southeast of Lafayette.

"We are very much in business and have been," Herrington said later Saturday. "We have events tonight. All of those are taking place."

A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office and a tribal police dispatcher referred questions about the shootings to the State Police.

"We've got a lot of unanswered questions," State Police Capt. Doug Cain said.

One of the injured deputies was taken to a hospital in New Orleans and the other was taken to a Lafayette hospital. Both were listed in critical but stable condition Saturday evening, Hammons said.

S&P 500 is on track for a big winning streak

NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks rose on Wall Street in afternoon trading Friday after Procter & Gamble and Starbucks posted strong earnings reports, putting the Standard & Poor's 500 index on track for its longest winning streak since 2004.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 53 points to 13,878 as of 2:21 p.m. Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 advanced seven points to 1,502. The Nasdaq gained 20 points to 3,151.

The S&P 500 broke through 1,500 Thursday for the first time since December 2007, following a drop in claims for unemployment benefits that added to evidence that the labor market is healing. The index is headed for an eighth consecutive gain, which would be the longest winning streak since November 2004.

Procter & Gamble, world's largest consumer products maker, gained $2.49 to $72.91 after reporting that its quarterly income more than doubled. P&G also raised its profit forecast for its full fiscal year. Starbucks rose $2.40 to $56.97 after reporting a 13 percent increase in profits.

"Earnings are growing," said Joe Tanious, a global market strategist at JPMorgan. "The bottom line is that corporate America is doing exceptionally well."

Tanious expects corporate earnings to grow at about 5 percent over the "next year or two," and stock valuations to rise. Currently, the S&P 500 is trading at an average price-to-earnings ratio of 14, below an average of 15.1 for the last decade, according to FactSet data.

Apple continued to decline, allowing Exxon Mobil to once again surpass the electronics giant as the world's most valuable publicly traded company. Apple fell 1 percent to $444.26, following a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage drop for the company since 2008, after Apple forecast slower sales. The stock is now $257.84, or 37 percent, below the record high of $702.10 it reached Sept. 19.

Apple first surpassed Exxon in market value in the summer of 2011, grabbing a title Exxon had held since 2005. The two traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon in early 2012.

Stocks have surged this month, with the S&P 500 advancing 5.4 percent this month. It jumped at the start of the year when lawmakers reached a last-minute deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." Stocks built on those gains on optimism that the housing market is recovering and the labor market is healing. The Dow Jones is up 6 percent on the year.

Deutsche Bank analysts raised their year-end target for the index to 1,600 from 1,575.

Companies will be able to maintain their earnings even if lawmakers in Washington decide to implement wide-ranging spending cuts to narrow the budget deficit, the analysts said in a note sent to clients late Thursday.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, climbed 5 basis points to 1.91 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves.

? Halliburton gained $1.87 to $39.69 after posting a loss that was smaller than analysts had expected. The oilfield services company said fourth-quarter profits declined 26 percent to $669 million on increasing pricing pressure in the North American market and one-time charges from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Wall Street had expected worse.

?Hasbro fell $1.45 to $37 after the toy maker said its fourth-quarter revenue failed to meet expectations because of poor demand over the holidays. The company plans to cut about 10 percent of its workforce and consolidate facilities to cut expenses.

? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters rose $1.10 to $44.88 after an analyst noted that sales of a competing coffee brewer introduced by Starbucks were getting off to a weak start.

Hackers take over sentencing commission website

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The hacker-activist group Anonymous says it hijacked the website of the U.S. Sentencing Commission to avenge the death of Aaron Swartz, an Internet activist who committed suicide.

The website of the commission, an independent agency of the judicial branch, was taken over early Saturday and replaced with a message warning that when Swartz killed himself two weeks ago "a line was crossed."

The hackers say they've infiltrated several government computer systems and copied secret information that they now threaten to make public.

Family and friends of Swartz, who helped create Reddit and RSS, say he killed himself after he was hounded by federal prosecutors. Officials say he helped post millions of court documents for free online and that he illegally downloaded millions of academic articles from an online clearinghouse.

S&P closes above 1,500 for 1st time since 2007

NEW YORK (AP) ? Passing another milestone on the nation's long journey back from the Great Recession, the Standard and Poor's 500 index closed above 1,500 for the first time in more than five years Friday after a wave of good earnings reports.

It took scores of incremental gains, several stalled rallies and a few sickening falls, but the widely watched S&P, one of the broadest measures of the American stock market, finished at 1,502.96, up 8.14 points. The index had not closed above 1,500 since December 2007, the start of the worst economic downturn since the 1930s.

The news came on top of other hopeful signs that the economy is slowly recovering. Housing is rebounding. Companies are hiring again, albeit slowly, and their earnings, a big driver of stock prices, are at record levels.

"The bottom line is that corporate America is doing exceptionally well," said Joe Tanious, a global market strategist at JPMorgan.

The breakthrough happened on an eighth straight daily gain for stocks, itself a remarkable performance. That is the longest winning streak since November 2004.

Stocks have surged this month, with the S&P advancing 5.4 percent. It jumped at the start of the year when lawmakers reached a last-minute deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff." Signs that Europe has avoided financial collapse also helped.

Stocks fell sharply during the Great Recession. By March 2009, the S&P was 57 percent below its October 2007 peak, a harrowing plunge that scarred a generation of small investors and, some Wall Street experts believe, will keep them away from stocks for years to come.

Since that fall, the market has climbed sharply, though it has endured several big declines. In May 2010, a trading glitch set off a so-called flash crash that sent stocks plummeting. And in August 2011, stocks gyrated like a roller coaster for several days as fears mounted that the U.S. would default on its debts.

On Friday, stocks were helped by earnings from two big companies. Procter & Gamble, the world's largest consumer products maker, rose $2.83 to $73.25 after reporting that its quarterly income more than doubled. P&G also raised its profit forecast for its full fiscal year. Starbucks climbed $2.24 to $56.81 after reporting a 13 percent increase in profits.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed at 13,895.98, up 70.65 points. The Dow is up 6 percent on the year.

The Nasdaq composite gained 19.33 points to 3,149.71.

The Dow is now just 268 points below its record high of 14,165, reached on Oct. 9, 2007, two month before the recession began. The Dow has more than doubled since its recession low of 6,547 on March 9, 2009.

The S&P 500 is 62 points shy of its record of 1,565, reached on the same day the Dow hit its peak. The S&P has also more than doubled from its low of 676, which happened on the same day the Dow bottomed out in 2009.

JPMorgan's Tanious expects stocks to go even higher. He says corporate earnings should grow at about 5 percent over the next year or two, and stock valuations will rise. Currently, the S&P 500 is trading at an average price-to-earnings ratio of 14, below an average of 15.1 for the last decade, according to FactSet data.

On Friday, Apple continued to decline, allowing Exxon Mobil to once again surpass the electronics giant as the world's most valuable publicly traded company. Apple fell 2.4 percent to $439.88, following a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage decline for the company since 2008, after Apple forecast slower sales. The stock is now 37 percent below the record high of $702.10 it reached Sept. 19.

Apple first surpassed Exxon in market value in the summer of 2011, grabbing a title Exxon had held since 2005. The two traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon in early 2012.

Not everyone on Wall Street thought the S&P milestone was worth celebrating. Some noted the stock market is more a reflection of how traders feel than a reflection of underlying fundamentals.

"It's not a landmark that we really follow or that we really care about," said Derrick Irwin, portfolio manager for Wells Fargo Advantage Funds. "Focusing on the benchmarks can end up shooting you in the foot, as we've seen."

Some of the rise may also be due to investing stock market momentum. A rule of thumb is that when a stock price or an overall index gets tantalizingly close to a milestone, as the S&P has been for days now, it's almost certain to cross that milestone, at least temporarily.

"Sure, it's a good thing," said Christian Bertelsen, chief investment officer of Global Financial Private Capital in Sarasota, Fla. "But I wouldn't read too much into it."

Still, Deutsche Bank analysts raised their year-end target for the index to 1,600 from 1,575.

Companies will be able to maintain their earnings even if lawmakers in Washington decide to implement wide-ranging spending cuts to narrow the budget deficit, the analysts said in a note sent to clients late Thursday.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, climbed 11 basis points to 1.95 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves.

? Halliburton gained $1.91 to $39.72 after posting a loss that was smaller than analysts had expected. The oilfield-services company said fourth-quarter profits declined 26 percent to $669 million on increasing pricing pressure in the North American market and one-time charges from the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Wall Street had expected worse.

? Hasbro fell $1.14 to $37.31 after the toy maker said its fourth-quarter revenue failed to meet expectations because of poor demand over the holidays. The company plans to cut about 10 percent of its workforce and consolidate facilities to cut expenses.

? Green Mountain Coffee Roasters rose $2.53 to $46.31 after an analyst noted that sales of a competing coffee brewer introduced by Starbucks were getting off to a weak start.

Spam hits five-year low (but it's still two thirds of all email)

17 hrs.

A new report from Kaspersky Lab indicates that the amount of spam in the world continues to decline, although it's nowhere near disappearing. It's also being replaced with other, more substantial threats.

Spam levels dropped throughout 2012, and by the end of the year it was steadily below 70 percent of all email detected. In the heyday of spam, it consistently made up around 85 percent, according to Kaspersky's numbers.

A number of factors have contributed to this. People and email providers have instituted more effective spam filters, for one thing, and a major security hole that allowed people to spoof an email's sender was closed this year.

The reduced effectiveness of spam emails means spammers have to send more to get any hits. Kaspersky calculates that it cost spammers $150 for every million emails sent ? cheap indeed, but the success rate is so low that legal, normal advertising on Google and Facebook actually end up beinga better deal.

Of course, not every spammer is just aiming for cheap advertising. There are plenty?selling illegal services or products, or looking to hijack your computer with malicious attachments or phishing attempts. Since legal advertisement isn't an option, they're doubling down on spam. For that reason, Kaspersky suggests spam reduction in 2013 will be "negligible at best."

The full, detailed report, with many more details about the origins and types of 2012's spam, can be read here.

U.S. researchers tracking flu through Twitter

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Researchers and computer scientists at Johns Hopkins University have devised a way to track cases of influenza across the United States using the microblogging site Twitter.

Twitter is full of tweets about the flu, which has been severe and reached epidemic proportions this year, but it has been difficult to separate tweets about the flu from actual cases.

"We wanted to separate hype about the flu from messages from people who truly become ill," said Mark Dredze, an assistant research professor in Johns Hopkins' department of computer science, who monitors public health trends by looking at tweets.

To solve the problem, Dredze and his colleagues developed a screening method based on human language-processing technologies that only delivers real-time information on actual flu cases and filters out the rest of the chatter on the public tweets in the United States.

The researchers at the Baltimore university tested the system by comparing their results with data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"In late December," Dredze said on Thursday, "the news media picked up on the flu epidemic, causing a somewhat spurious rise in the rate produced by our Twitter system. But our new algorithm handles this effect much better than other systems, ignoring the spurious spike in tweets."

The scientists, whose research was funded partly by the National Institutes of Health's Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study, have also produced maps of the United States that show the impact of the flu on each state.

Dredze said he hoped the system could be used to track the other illnesses.

(AP) ? Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points and won his rematch with Kevin Garnett as the New York Knicks ended an 11-game losing streak in Boston with an 89-86 victory over the Celtics on Thursday night.

It came 17 days after a verbal clash between the All-Star forwards following Boston's 102-96 victory in New York led to Anthony's one-game suspension.

Anthony was booed frequently Thursday but there was no sign of hostility with Garnett. At one point, Anthony even extended his hand to a fallen Garnett and helped the Celtic to his feet.

Rajon Rondo led the Celtics with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, his fourth triple-double of the season. Paul Pierce added 22 points. Garnett had only eight points but finished with a game-high 12 rebounds as Boston lost its fifth straight game.

There were 17 lead changes in the game but none in the fourth quarter.

In the first half, Anthony was booed nearly every time he touched the ball and cheered when he was called for fouls as fans reacted to the last meeting between the star forwards. One of the biggest cheers came when Garnett blocked Anthony's layup attempt with 3:15 left in the second quarter.

Garnett and Anthony had jawed with each other during the teams' previous matchup. After that game, Anthony walked toward the Celtics locker room before security personnel stepped in and sent him back toward the Knicks' room.

Comcast SportsNet New England posted a video on its website showing Anthony waiting near Boston's team bus after the game, with coach Mike Woodson and New York City police nearby.

The NBA suspended Anthony for the next game, an 81-76 loss at Indiana.

On Thursday, the Celtics took their last lead, 66-65, on a 3-pointer by Jeff Green with 2:22 left in the third quarter. Then Tyson Chandler put the Knicks ahead with a three-point play and they scored the last seven points of the period, taking a 72-66 lead.

They increased that to 84-76 before the Celtics cut it to two on a basket by Garnett and two by Rondo. Amare Stoudemire's tip made it 86-82 with 3:24 left before Rondo sank two free throws and J.R. Smith hit a 3-pointer. Rondo cut the lead to 89-86 with a field goal with 40 seconds to go and Jason Kidd missed a 3-pointer for the Knicks with 14 seconds remaining.

But Boston's last chance ended when Pierce lost the ball out of bounds as he was receiving a pass with 7.1 seconds left.

Anthony scored at least 20 points for the 27th straight game, third most in franchise history behind Richie Guerin's 29 and Patrick Ewing's 28.

The Knicks led 50-48 at halftime but trailed 60-59 with just under five minutes remaining in the third quarter. Then they outscored the Celtics 13-6, with Anthony scoring six points.

You know it's cold when ski resorts close the mountain

People are bundled up against the cold on New York's 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The temperature was around 12 degrees, but with wind gusts of 15-20 mph, it felt more like five below.

By John Newland and Andrew Mach, NBC News

Arctic air kept a cold blanket of misery over the Northeast Thursday as the region experienced the kind of temperatures that have left the Upper Midwest shivering for days.

Temperatures struggled to break zero Wednesday in New York and New England, while dangerous wind chills and lake-effect snows continued to threaten large parts of the Midwest and Northeast into Thursday and beyond.

In several areas of the country temperatures hovered around zero, but the coldest place being International Falls, Minn., where the temperature was -20 degrees. The conditions were especially difficult for those who work outside. NBC's Kevin Tibbles reports.

The deepest freeze was felt in northern Minnesota, where the thermometer dipped to 27 degrees below zero, according to the?National Weather Service.

For comparison?s sake, that was 109 degrees colder than the nation?s warmest spots, both in Texas.

Around New York City, the coldest air in two years seized the area on Wednesday,?NBCNewYork.com reported, noting that while highs will reach the 20s Thursday, winds will be higher, so it will still feel brutally cold.

More news from NBCNewYork.com

The temperatures were so low that New Hampshire's Wildcat Mountain ski resort was closed Wednesday and Thursday, The Associated Press reported. Temperatures were already in the negative double digits, but the wind chill reached a numbing 48 below zero, making conditions unsafe.

The AP said that four deaths -- two in Illinois and one each in Wisconsin and Minnesota -- have been attributed at least partly to the cold.

The Upper Midwest remained locked in a bitter, sub-zero chill Wednesday. Here, a brave soul walks his dog at Lake Harriet near Minneapolis.

Also in the Northeast,?victims of the massive storm Sandy?were hit hard by the cold. Some who were left in makeshift homes sought shelter in tents equipped with propane heaters, while those in damaged homes suffered frozen pipes, according to The AP.

The misery is spreading southward, as well.?The Weather Channel predicted a wide belt of snow in the Mid-Atlantic and lower Midwest, with ice storms possible in as far south as the northern Atlanta suburbs.

The National Weather Service expects below freezing temperatures and light rain toward the end of the day Thursday. By Friday, forecasters said up to a quarter inch of ice was possible across parts of Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia and North and South Carolina.

That could create treacherous driving conditions and cause some power outages, Weather.com reported.

And just as the current system moves out to sea, another is pushing into the West Coast.

"The calm before the storm is the best way to describe the weather Thursday," weather.com lead?Meteorologist?Kevin Roth?wrote.

Unions suffer sharp decline in membership

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Union membership plummeted last year to the lowest level since the 1930s as cash-strapped state and local governments shed workers and unions had difficulty organizing new members in the private sector despite signs of an improving economy.

Government figures released Wednesday showed union membership declined from 11.8 percent to 11.3 percent of the workforce, another blow to a labor movement already stretched thin by battles in Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and other states to curb bargaining rights and weaken union clout.

Overall membership fell by about 400,000 workers to 14.4 million, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. More than half the loss, about 234,000, came from government workers, including teachers, firefighters and public administrators.

But unions also saw losses in the private sector even as the economy created 1.8 million new jobs in 2012. That membership rate fell from 6.9 percent to 6.6 percent, a troubling sign for the future of organized labor, as job growth generally has taken place at nonunion companies.

"To employers, it's going to look like the labor movement is ready for a knockout punch," said Gary Chaison, professor of industrial relations at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. "You can't be a movement and get smaller."

Union membership was 13.2 percent in 1935 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the National Labor Relations Act. Labor's ranks peaked in the 1950s, when about 1 of every 3 workers was in a union. By 1983, roughly 20 percent of U.S. workers were union members.

Losses in the public sector are hitting unions particularly hard because that has been one of the few areas where membership had grown over the past two decades. About 51 percent of union members work in government, where the rate of union membership is 37 percent, more than five times higher than in the private sector.

Until recently, there had been little resistance to unions organizing government workers. But that began to change when Republican Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin signed a law in 2011 eliminating most union rights for government workers. The state lost about 46,000 union members last year, the vast majority in the public sector.

The recession that began in 2008 also led to much deeper cuts in state and local government than any previous recession, according to a report this month from the Nelson Rockefeller Institute of Government at the State University of New York at Albany. Since August 2008, state government employment has declined by 135,000, while local government employment fell by 546,000.

Teachers unions were among the hardest hit, with the ranks of unionized public school teachers and educators falling by 123,000 last year. Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, the nation's largest teachers union, accused politicians who cut public education funding of "inflicting tremendous harm to our nation's 50 million students and risking our children's future."

Despite the steady membership decline, unions remain a potent political force because of the money they spend helping union-friendly candidates seeking public office. Unions spent more than $400 million during the 2012 election cycle to support President Barack Obama's re-election, keep a Democratic majority in the Senate and aid other state and local candidates.

But as more governors and state lawmakers target unions, labor leaders have been forced to spend more money fighting political skirmishes and less on organizing new members.

"Organizing is very expensive, and it gets fought now in the public sector as well as in the private sector," said Barry Hirsch, a labor economist at Georgia State University.

Dwindling membership means unions carry far less influence than they used to in setting a benchmark for wages and benefits that might be followed at nonunion companies. Unions are already gearing up to defeat Republican governors in Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, where they fear more anti-union measures could crop up soon.

Union officials blame membership losses on the lingering effects of the recession, as well as GOP governors and state lawmakers who have sought to weaken union rights.

"Our still-struggling economy, weak laws and political as well as ideological assaults have taken a toll on union membership and in the process have also imperiled economic security and good, middle-class jobs," said AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

In Indiana, where a new right-to-work law took effect last March, the state lost about 56,000 union members. The law prohibits unions from requiring workers to pay union fees, even if they benefit from a collective bargaining agreement. Michigan lawmakers approved a similar measure in December.

Another problem for unions is an aging membership that is not being replaced by younger members. By age, the union membership rate was highest among workers age 55 to 64 (14.9 percent) and lowest among those 16 to 24 (4.2 percent).

In New York, the state with the highest union density, nearly one-quarter of the workforce belonged to a union. North Carolina had the lowest at 2.9 percent.

Among full-time wage and salary workers, union members in 2012 had median weekly earnings of $943, while those who were not union members earned $742.

2012 Home Sales: Best in 5 Years | AOL Real Estate

By Les Christie

Steady December home sales capped the best year for the U.S. real estate market in five years, according to an industry trade group report Tuesday. The National Association of Realtors said that December sales of previously-owned homes came in just slightly below November's sales pace, but up 12.8% from a year ago. That brought full-year sales to 4.65 million, up 9% from 2011 and the best year for home sales since 2007, when there were 5 million homes sold just before the start of the recession.

Sales are being helped by a combination of strong market fundamentals -- near record low mortgage rates, lower unemployment and a rebound in home prices, all of which are bringing in buyers into the market who had been waiting for it to hit bottom. The mortgage rates and years of depressed home prices have also combined to create the most affordable housing market on record, according to the Realtors group. And the Realtors are predicting strong sales should continue into 2013 and beyond. It has a forecast for 5.1 million existing home sales this year, and 5.4 million next year.

The improved demand for homes in December led to the inventory of homes for sale to fall to 1.82 million homes on the market, the lowest supply since January 2001. One factor in tightening supplies is a drop in foreclosures and other distressed home sales, which made up only 24% of home sales in December compared to 32% a year ago. The tighter supply, and the drop in distressed sales, have helped to lift home prices so that the median sales price for the year rose to $176,600, up 6.3% from 2011. That's the biggest gain in prices since the bubble year of 2005.

The rebound in the market for previously-owned homes is also showing up in the market for new homes, where sales rebounded to their highest levels since 2009, while housing starts reached the highest level since 2008.

Kane County Chronicle | Some see benefits of bringing pets to work

Each day Fred Krause heads to the office, he?s joined by a friendly co-worker who usually spends his time lying near the cash register.

Krause, owner of Structures and Trains by Fred in Batavia, is one of a handful of area business owners who bring a pet to work. Bowie, a petite Shetland sheepdog (named after musician David Bowie because he has one blue eye and one brown eye), regularly accompanies Krause to work and has become well-known to his customers.

?He?s actually a very good partner,? he said.

Bowie has his office quirks. He barks whenever Krause gives customers change at the cash register, and he gets a little excited when Krause turns on one of the model trains in his shop.

For business owners such as Krause, having a four-legged companion in the office makes a difference in the workplace atmosphere. Several area business owners bring their pets with them to work because they say it boosts morale and draws in customers.

For Krause, having his pet at work was important enough to make a stipulation in his lease when he rented his office space on Island Avenue. Having Bowie at work was an issue when Krause was at a different office a few blocks away, where neighbors complained about Bowie?s barking.

That?s one of the downsides to having a pet at work.

?We were kind of evicted,? he said. ?When we rented this place, I said, ?the dog?s got to come.? ?

It can be time-consuming to periodically take pets outside during the work day or fence them off if a customer doesn?t like pets. For those reasons, animals don?t belong in every workplace setting, some say.

But those who bring their pets to work say the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

Taffy Wille, co-owner of Geneva Tire & Auto Store in Geneva, brings her two golden retrievers and springer spaniel into work one at a time during different days of the week. She said it has been a tradition in her family business since the oldest dog was a puppy.

?As they grew up, people grew to love them,? she said. ?They bring smiles to customers? faces.?

Wille said each of her dogs has a different personality. Taxi, a golden retriever, usually greets customers with a toy and loves attention. She describes her other golden retriever, Revo, as ?the worker? because he likes to move cardboard boxes around when they get a delivery. And their springer spaniel, Payton, is older and likes to relax when he?s at work.

?They?re a stress reliever for us,? Wille said. ?I wish more businesses allowed their pets to come to work. It?s amazing no matter how rotten your day is going, a pet can turn your whole day around.?

At Apple Graphics in Batavia, an American Staffordshire terrier and Rhodesian Ridgeback mix named Taxi goes to work every day with Kyle Hempel, director of sales. Hempel said his co-workers love having the dog there and often bring treats for him. He said the only time he was nervous about bringing Taxi into work was when Taxi was potty training.

But he said he hasn?t had any issues in the five years Taxi has accompanied him to work.

?I definitely think any business owner should try to bring in pets,? he said. ?It usually goes over really well.?

Two Havanese dogs named Leo and Lucy also have become fixtures at Mercedes-Benz of St. Charles. General Manager Craig Falkenthal brings them in at least once a month, sometimes more, because as it turns out, they?re big customer pleasers.

He said some customers bring their dogs to the dealership, and he believes being such a dog-friendly place entices customers to patronize the dealership.

?The customers absolutely love having the dogs at the dealership,? Falkenthal said. ?It completely humanizes the people at the dealership. ... Dogs emphasize the human side of us.?

Amgen 4Q profit drops 16 pct. on higher spending

Drugmaker Amgen Inc. on Wednesday posted a 16 percent drop in fourth-quarter profit, as higher costs for production, marketing, research and other items offset higher sales for many of its biologic medicines. The results fell short of Wall Street expectations.

The world's biggest biotech company, based in Thousand Oaks, Calif., said net income was $788 million, or $1.01 per share, for the three months ended Dec. 31. That was down from $934 million, or $1.08 per share, a year earlier.

Excluding one-time items, net income would have been $1.40 per share. That's 4 cents less than analysts expected, on average, according to research provider FactSet.

In after-hours trading, Amgen shares fell 21 cents to $82.86. They had fallen 22 cents in the regular session before the results were released.

The maker of anemia treatments Aranesp and Epogen said revenue rose 11 percent to $4.42 billion. Analysts predicted sales of $4.37 billion.

Sales were led by immune disorder treatment Enbrel, up 23 percent from the 2011 quarter to $1.16 billion, and Neulasta and Neupogen for fighting infection in cancer patients. They had a combined $1.31 billion in sales, down 1 percent.

Sales of Aranesp and Epogen fell 9 percent and 1 percent, respectively, to a combined $968 million.

Several newer drugs had double-digit jumps in revenue, including Prolia for osteoporosis, Xgeva for preventing fractures in cancerous bones and Sensipar for excessive calcium levels and a thyroid disorder.

"We enter 2013 with good momentum, a broad late-stage pipeline and a continued focus on building our business internationally," Amgen CEO Robert A. Bradway said in a statement.

The company expects 2013 earnings per share of $6.85 to $7.15. That's above the average prediction of analysts for $7 per share.

Amgen predicted 2013 revenue will fall between $17.8 billion to $18.2 billion, compared with Wall Street's forecast for sales of $17.75 billion.

Amgen noted its free cash flow rose to $5.2 billion for 2012, from $4.5 billion in 2011.

For the full year, net income was $4.35 billion, or $5.52 per share. That was up from $3.68 billion, or $4.04 per share, in 2011. The 2012 per-share results got a significant boost from a sharp reduction in the number of outstanding shares.

Revenue rose 11 percent in 2012, to $17.27 billion from $15.58 billion.

Australian Open all atwitter about Sloane Stephens

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) ? Sloane Stephens wiped away tears as she thought about hanging a poster of herself on a wall in the place of her childhood hero.

The 19-year-old American seemed to be in shock, barely able to compute how she'd produced the upset of the Australian Open by beating 15-time major winner Serena Williams in the quarterfinals Wednesday. It was her first trip that far in seven Grand Slam tournaments.

A poster of Williams had adorned the wall on Stephens' bedroom as a child. Now, in her view, they're peers.

"This is so crazy," Stephens said in a post-match TV interview after rallying from a set and a break down against an injured and angry Williams. "Oh my goodness. I think I'll put a poster of myself (up) now."

The 29th-seeded Stephens won 3-6, 7-5, 6-4. She calmed the nerves and started swinging harder and lifting her tempo at 4-3 in the second.

That's when Williams jarred her back trying to pull up before the net as she chased down a drop shot. Williams let out a loud scream and hopped away. Stephens had a look back over the net, seemingly in concern.

Williams started taking time between points, limping, and trying to stay in the shade at the back of the court.

Williams later called for the trainer between games. She had a three-minute medical timeout and came back serving at a pace well below her usual speed.

"Well, at that point you just have to pretend like nothing's wrong," Williams said. "You think of worst case scenarios. You know, I just thought, Ok, just pretend nothing's wrong and just try your best."

Stephen's surprise win did instant wonders for her celebrity.

Before the match, Stephens said she had about 17,000 followers on Twitter. A few hours after reaching her first Grand Slam semifinal, she had more than 40,000.

And she sounded like an excited schoolgirl as she gushed about receiving a congratulatory tweet from American singer John Legend.

"I want John Legend to sing at my wedding!" she said. "I was like, 'Oh my God. He tweeted me. What can I do?'"

She re-tweeted the sentiments from Legend: "Just found out her dad is John Stephens from the Pats. (that's my real name) I had his football card when I was a kid. I was so proud, ha ha."

Stephens' father, former New England Patriots player, died in 2009.

Retired basketball star Shaquille O'Neal sent a message that read: "When u defeat a legend you become a legend." The Dallas Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki wrote, "Wow. What a win for Sloane. Some amazing defense. She gets every ball back."

Stephens checked her phone during her post-match news conference and said there were 213 text messages waiting for her.

Like many a teenager, her first concern was about how high her phone bill might be.

"I thought it was free to receive text messages, but someone told me otherwise," she said.

Her mother "is going to be like, 'The money you were going to buy yourself something nice with, you're going to pay your phone bill.'"

She's set for her biggest payday, regardless of the result in Thursday's semifinal against defending champion Victoria Azarenka, who beat two-time major winner Svetlana Kuznetsova 7-5, 6-1 in the previous match in Rod Laver Arena.

The semifinal losers earn $525,000, double what the quarterfinal losers receive. For Williams, there's a further $1,500 deduction after she was fined for racket abuse.

Stephens had practiced with Williams for the Fed Cup, but had played her only once, a straight sets loss at the Brisbane International earlier this month.

"Brisbane helped me because I got the first time we played out of the way," she said. "First time is always tough. Definitely I was glad that I got it there ... it helped me raise my level."

She'll need to maintain that level within 24 hours to play the top-ranked Azarenka on Thursday. That will follow the semifinal between No. 2-ranked Maria Sharapova and No. 6 Li Na, the 2011 French Open champion.

The makeup of the men's semifinals was as expected, although all but one of the four players had some difficulties getting there.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic will continue his bid for a third consecutive Australian title Thursday when he takes on No. 4 David Ferrer. No. 2 Roger Federer and No. 3 Andy Murray will meet Friday.

Djokovic had to get through a five-hour five-setter against No. 15 Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round. Ferrer had trouble in his quarterfinal against fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, who served for the match in the third and fourth sets before losing in five.

Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam champion, hadn't dropped serve in the tournament until the first set against 2008 finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Wednesday. He ended up with a struggle on his hands before advancing to his 10th consecutive Australian Open semifinal with a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3 win in 3 hours, 34 minutes.

"I thought he played very aggressive," Federer said. "I love those four-set or five-set thrillers, and I was part of one tonight."

Murray beat Jeremy Chardy of France 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 earlier Wednesday and hasn't dropped a set this tournament.

Stephens' previous best run at a major tournament was at last year's French Open, where she was the first American teenager to reach the fourth round since Williams in 2001.

She was the youngest player in the year-end top 50 despite missing the last six weeks of the season with an abdominal injury.

"I took a lot of time off just kind of being a normal kid, doing whatever," she said.

That means shopping, social networking and other things teens do.

Stephens was under real pressure early, and it showed. She double-faulted to give Williams triple break point in the eighth game, but could save only two. Williams started pumping her fist and yelling, "Come On."

Williams broke her serve again in the opening game of the second set.

"From then on, I got aggressive, started coming to the net more and just got a lot more comfortable," Stephens said.

That paid off when she broke back in the fourth game.

Williams had injured her ankle in her first-round win, and the back injury compounded her problems in what she said later was her worst major tournament in a long time.

The five-time Australian champion shanked a forehand to fall behind 2-1 in the third, then smashed her racket into the court, twice, flinging it toward the courtside chairs.

She picked up her service speed and was called for a foot fault, further annoying her.

Williams got the first break of the set and seemed to be back on track for victory, but Stephens answered immediately.

Serving to stay in the match, Williams hit an attempted passing shot long and looked up to the sky, muttering to herself.

She hit backhands into the net on the next two points, and her winning streak had ended.

Williams walked around the net post to shake Stephens' hand. The quick turnaround between matches makes it difficult for Stephens' family to make it to Australia for her semifinal.

"I'm kind of upset my mom's not here, and my brother," she said. "I know definitely everyone's watching back home and is very proud of me, so (I'll) just do my best and make them happy."

Setting the Dark on Fire: Beautiful view of clouds of cosmic dust in region of Orion

Jan. 23, 2013 ? In space, dense clouds of cosmic gas and dust are the birthplaces of new stars. In visible light, this dust is dark and obscuring, hiding the stars behind it. So much so that, when astronomer William Herschel observed one such cloud in the constellation of Scorpius in 1774, he thought it was a region empty of stars and is said to have exclaimed, "Truly there is a hole in the sky here!" [1]

In order to better understand star formation, astronomers need telescopes that can observe at longer wavelengths, such as the submillimetre range, in which the dark dust grains shine rather than absorb light. APEX, on the Chajnantor Plateau in the Chilean Andes, is the largest single-dish submillimetre-wavelength telescope operating in the southern hemisphere, and is ideal for astronomers studying the birth of stars in this way.

Located in the constellation of Orion (The Hunter), 1500 light-years away from Earth, the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex is the closest region of massive star formation to Earth, and contains a treasury of bright nebulae, dark clouds and young stars. The new image shows just part of this vast complex in visible light, with the APEX observations overlaid in brilliant orange tones that seem to set the dark clouds on fire. Often, the glowing knots from APEX correspond to darker patches in visible light -- the tell-tale sign of a dense cloud of dust that absorbs visible light, but glows at submillimetre wavelengths, and possibly a site of star formation.

The bright patch below of the centre of the image is the nebula NGC 1999. This region -- when seen in visible light -- is what astronomers call a reflection nebula, where the pale blue glow of background starlight is reflected from clouds of dust. The nebula is mainly illuminated by the energetic radiation from the young star V380 Orionis [2] lurking at its heart. In the centre of the nebula is a dark patch, which can be seen even more clearly in a well-known image (http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/opo0010a/) from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

Normally, a dark patch such as this would indicate a dense cloud of cosmic dust, obscuring the stars and nebula behind it. However, in this image we can see that the patch remains strikingly dark, even when the APEX observations are included. Thanks to these APEX observations, combined with infrared observations from other telescopes, astronomers believe that the patch is in fact a hole or cavity in the nebula, excavated by material flowing out of the star V380 Orionis. For once, it truly is a hole in the sky!

The region in this image is located about two degrees south of the large and well-known Orion Nebula (Messier 42), which can be seen at the top edge of the wider view in visible light from the Digitized Sky Survey.

The APEX observations used in this image were led by Thomas Stanke (ESO), Tom Megeath (University of Toledo, USA), and Amy Stutz (Max Planck Institute for Astronomy, Heidelberg, Germany). APEX is a collaboration between the Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy (MPIfR), the Onsala Space Observatory (OSO) and ESO. Operation of APEX at Chajnantor is entrusted to ESO.

Buying a Home: Good or Bad for Your Credit? | AOL Real Estate

Home mortgage: good debt? By Shannon McNay

When it comes to debt, we each tend to think of different types of debt in different ways. For example, you may feel "normal" for having an auto loan but ashamed of having credit card debt. So what about real estate? People buy homes either as a home to live in or as a way to earn extra income. Either way, I think it's safe to say that most look at it as "good" debt -- either out of necessity (the cost of a home makes it nearly impossible for anyone to purchase one in cash) or simply because it's so common.

Since the housing bubble burst, it may be time to rethink whether real estate can always be considered "good" debt. Like anything else, the answer to this depends on where you are financially and what you can afford to take on. Below are a few points to help you make a decision that's right for you.

First off, let's go through a few questions:

How Will You Pay?

This is more important than you may realize. The way you choose to pay will have a direct and large impact on everything to follow. To start off, if there's any way at all you can pay for the property in cash, then you may want to do that. Any time you can avoid losing money to interest, that's something to take very seriously. Of course, you may not have enough money to pay in cash, or you may not want to drain your savings account if you do. If either is the case, consider your down payment. The larger your down payment (20 percent is considered very good), the lower your monthly mortgage payment will be (as well as the lower principle balance). And while someone may offer you credit for little to no down payment, this will cost you more in interest in the long run. Higher mortgage payments leave you less income to save and to meet basic needs.

What's Your Score?

Do you know your credit score? Now's the time to find out what it is and do everything in your power to raise it before you obtain a new mortgage. This includes disputing any errors and paying off whatever debt you can. The score you have when you apply will determine exactly how much you can borrow and at what interest rate. If your score needs a lot of work, then you are probably better off spending your time and resources building that first. Remember, if you're going to take out a 30-year loan on a property, it's worth waiting a year or two to get a lower interest rate. A change in interest rate can cost -- or save -- you thousands of dollars during the life of your loan. First, you have to understand your credit report. As you work on building your credit, you can check your progress by obtaining your credit score every month. There are many free options, among them is Credit.com's Credit Report Card.

How Will This Affect Your Debt-to-Income Ratio?

How much money do you earn and how much money do you owe? This is very important to consider both when applying for new loans and when simply evaluating your financial health. It's best to stay at or under 30 percent, so take a look at what your new payments will be and compare them to what you take home. If the number hovers at 50 percent or above, you may not be in the best financial health to purchase a new home. Remember that real estate comes with many other costs like taxes, eventual repairs, maintenance and so on. So if there's little to no extra room in your budget for these costs, purchasing a home could really put you in hot water later.

If you've answered these questions and decided to move forward with purchasing real estate as an investment, let's just take one more look at how it can affect your credit score.

How It Can Hurt

There are many ways a mortgage can hurt your credit score. Making late payments is the No. 1 way to damage your score. If you have a high debt-to-income ratio, that may also translate to a dependency on credit cards that leaves you with high revolving balances. This also has a negative impact on your score. The No. 1 thing to consider isn't just the amount of money you're making now, but the likelihood that your job is secure and that the income is reliable -- and also make sure you understand the difference between a fixed rate and a variable rate. The variable rate may seem low now, but if you budget your mortgage based on that, you're at a high risk of not being able to make your payments if and when the rate goes up. No matter what, determine your risk of not being able to make payments before taking the plunge.

How It Can Help

There are ways that a mortgage can help your credit score -- especially if you make timely payments. Having a history with a financial institution does have a positive effect on your credit score, but only if you make payments on time, every time. Want to pay off this debt even faster? You could sign up for biweekly payments rather than make one monthly payment. This splits your monthly payment in two and equals one extra payment each year while having little effect on your monthly budget. In other words, you'll save money on interest payments, lower the life of your loan, and ensure that you don't have late payments on your credit report.

It comes down to this: There's no such thing as a good debt or bad debt. It all depends on the timing in your life. Are you ready for the payments, will you be able to afford the payments in the years to come, and do you have contingency plans set up to prevent potential financial disaster? Explore everything that can go wrong and what you're prepared for so you can make a decision that you won't come to regret. And remember, a "no" doesn't last forever -- it could mean "not now"! If you determine you're not ready, then take the steps to get yourself there so you can accomplish your dream of homeownership.
