The enzymes that are used are called cellulases. They can cleave cellulose and hemicellulose - both components of wood (besides lignin) - into small sugar molecules, explains Professor Christian Kubicek of the Technical University of Vienna. In the framework of the center of excellence acib, he works together with researchers in Graz and at an industrial partner's site on the access of new industrial sugars from renewable resources. The enzymes work like choppers, says Professor Anton Glieder, scientific director of acib, "the long cellulose chains are transported through the enzymes. Thereby, the enzyme cuts small sugar molecules off the comparatively huge cellulose chain, until the whole cellulose is digested into smaller sugars." The best enzymes for the process are produced using the fungus Trichoderma reesei, which normally grows on decaying wood residues. In the Styrian project "MacroFun" at Graz University of Technology the fungal enzymes are be improved by using the yeast Pichia pastoris to make the "molecular shredder" more robust, declares Glieder.
Admittedly, the general procedure is still extensive, says Kubicek. The plant remains or "energy crops" such as flower stalk grass (Miscanthus) or switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) must first be "unlocked" to separate the lignin and make the cellulose accessible. Then specially designed cellulases come into play and cleave the long cellulose chains into small sugars. These are finally converted - similar to the alcoholic fermentation in wine - from yeast to bioethanol, which can then be used for biofuels. The great advantage of this method: food remains completely unaffected and the carbon footprint looks a lot better.
How promising this type of sugar and subsequently biofuel production is, shows the fact that in Europe alone 400 million tons of wheat straw per year accumulate. To ensure a sustainable use, 30% of them remain on the field to regenerate the soil, but the enormous residue can be processed further. Actually, about 1 liter of bioethanol could be made from 5 kg of straw. The goal for acib is to raise the yield by optimization of the degrading enzymes and to make more yet unused sugar sources available for biofuel production. 2nd generation biofuels could be ready to use within 3 to 5 years, says Glieder.

Students who studied a lot at the expense of sleep had significantly more negative incidents, such as not understanding a lecture, as those who kept a more balanced study schedule. Christie Nicholson reports.

Before a big exam we?ve all been tempted to cram at the expense of a good night's sleep. But sleep is just as critical for school success as reviewing those notes. In fact, compromising on sleep can negate any advantage from extra studying.
In a new study, scientists had more than 500 high school students document how long they studied and slept over two weeks. They also had them note any negatives during that period?things like not understanding a lecture.
The researchers found that the students who studied a lot at the expense of sleep had significantly more issues than those who kept a more balanced study schedule. Overall, those students who studied the most still had the best grades. But researchers note that those same students tended to keep a consistent schedule, and did not vary the length of study or sleep time. It was the irregular sleep schedules in particular that correlated with more academic problems.
Another case in point to support the tortoise way: slow and steady wins the race, even academically.

LONDON (AP) ? Two Russian businessmen rose to riches together in the chaotic years of post-Soviet Russia and then became archenemies ? and a British judge will soon rule on which oligarch will defeat the other in a multi-billion-dollar court battle.
After a seven-month delay, Judge Elizabeth Gloster is expect to deliver a summary ruling Friday to settle the legal feud between Roman Abramovich, the billionaire Chelsea Football Club owner, and self-exiled tycoon Boris Berezovsky.
The feud, the most high-profile commercial case at London's High Court in recent years, has fascinated the British and Russian media with intriguing tales about the tycoons' jet-setting lives and the lawless Wild West years that followed the 1991 breakup of the Soviet Union.
Berezovsky, 66, is a former Kremlin power broker who fled to Britain after falling out with President Vladimir Putin. He sued the 45-year-old Abramovich, who he calls his former friend, prot?g? and business partner, alleging that Abramovich threatened him into selling his stakes in the Russian oil giant Sibneft vastly beneath their value. Berezovsky alleged blackmail and breach of contract ? and is seeking more than 3 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) in damages.
Abramovich has denied the allegations and his lawyer has accused Berezovsky of lying and making up stories.
"I'm an optimistic person, it's in my genes. So, of course, I'm confident that the judgment will go my way," Berezovsky said ahead of the ruling.
Abramovich's lawyers did not immediately respond to calls seeking comment.
Both tycoons were cross-examined and sat across each other in the courtroom on most days during the four-month trial, which attracted large crowds of journalists, lawyers and spectators.
The case has sparked so much interest partly because of its focus on the two oligarchs' personal, as well as business, relationship. They were said to have become friends after meeting on a private cruise in the Caribbean, built a business empire together, but parted bitterly when their fortunes were reversed.
Berezovsky, a mathematician-turned-Mercedes dealer, amassed his wealth during Russia's privatization of state assets in the early 1990s. In return for backing former Russian President Boris Yeltsin, he gained powerful political connections and access to valuable assets at very low prices.
Berezovsky says he mentored the younger Abramovich, treated him like a son, and founded Sibneft with him and a third partner. Berezovsky claimed that the friendship faltered when he fell out with Putin, at which point Abramovich "intimidated" him into selling his Sibneft shares ? causing him losses of almost $6 billion.
In separate claims, Berezovsky also alleged breach of trust and breach of contract when Abramovich sold Berezovsky's alleged stake in aluminum conglomerate Rusal without his consent.
Abramovich claims that Berezovsky was not his mentor and never owned the stakes ? in fact, he argued that Berezovsky only had a political role in creating Sibneft and never "contributed a single cent" to acquiring or building up the company.
According to Abramovich, he had already paid more than $2.5 billion to Berezovsky for his services as his "political godfather" ? a protector whose political influence helped him do business ? and reluctantly funded Berezovsky's extravagant lifestyle of yachts and vacation homes because he feared retaliation. He doesn't owe Berezovsky any more money, he said.
"Our business relationship was over and yet he still treated me as his 'cash cow' and expected me to fund all of his expenses," Abramovich claimed in a statement. He described Berezovsky as ambitious, sometimes megalomaniacal, and a man who "would often start believing his own PR."
Charged in Russia with fraud and embezzlement, Berezovsky has been living in London since 2001.
Abramovich lives in Russia and is known to some as the "stealth oligarch" because of his low profile, but is widely known in Britain since he bought the Chelsea soccer club in 2003. His wealth is estimated to be 9.5 billion pounds (about $15 billion) by The Sunday Times.
The pair's feud is just one among many lucrative commercial fraud cases dealing with Russia and Central Asia that have found their way into London courts. Lawyers say many wealthy Russians distrust the legal infrastructure in their own country and flock to English courtrooms because they believe they can find fairness there.
Friday's summary verdict will be followed soon after by the handing down of an extended judgment, and lawyers from both sides will meet in the next few weeks to discuss appeals and legal costs.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Major League Baseball and ESPN have extended their television contract through 2021.
The deal was announced on Tuesday. It combines rights for TV, radio, digital and international that had been separate. The new single contract adds new rights to air a wild-card game, along with additional rights to highlights and digital content. It also gives the network more flexibility to show games involving popular teams.
The previous contracts were worth close to $360 million a year combined. A person with knowledge of the new combined deal says it will be worth about $700 million a year over eight years. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the financial figures were not released.
The extension was first reported by SportsBusiness Daily.

Peel Investments and UK Land Property have submitted plans for a 500,225 sq ft build-to-suit warehouse at Liverpool International Business Park.
The application for an as yet unidentified end user says the facility will provide up to 200 jobs. The warehouse will be built on Cell 10 a 26 acre extension to LIBP which was acquired by Peel in 2010.
The joint venture intends to build a 15.3m high distribution warehouse with ancillary offices and associated gatehouse, lorry wash, refuelling facilities, sub-station, sprinkler tank, pump house, cycle/motor cycle storage, car and lorry parking, access services yards, enclosure and landscaping.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? A powerful typhoon pounded South Korea with strong winds and heavy rain Tuesday as it churned up rough seas that smashed two fishing ships into rocks, killing at least five fishermen and forcing the coast guard to perform a daring rescue for the survivors.
Rescuers saved 12 fishermen and were still searching for 10 missing from the Chinese ships that hit rocks off South Korea's southern Jeju island.
Separately, at least three other people died as Typhoon Bolaven knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of South Koreans, canceled flights and temporarily halted joint war games by U.S. and South Korean military forces.
North Korea, which is still struggling to rebuild from massive floods and a devastating drought before that, was next in the typhoon's path. State media reported the country was being lashed by heavy rain and strong wind Tuesday.
Off Jeju island, dangerous waves kept rescue vessels from approaching the Chinese fishing ships. The coast guard used a special gun to shoot rope to one ship so officers could pull themselves over and bring the fishermen back to shore, coast guard spokesman Ko Chang-keon said.
Eighteen fishermen survived. Twelve were rescued by the coast guard and the others swam or were washed ashore.
South Korea issued a storm warning for the capital, Seoul, as Bolaven battered the country's south and west, knocking over street lights and church spires and ripping signs from stores. A large container box crushed an apartment janitor to death, a woman fell to her death from a rooftop where she kept dried red peppers and a third person died after bricks hit a house, according to disaster and fire officials.
Strong wind gusts left Seoul streets covered with leaves, garbage and branches. More than 15,000 schools cancelled classes, and businesses and homes taped windows or pasted the glass with wet newspapers to keep them from shattering.
More than 330,000 South Korean households lost power, the government said, and more than 70 were left homeless because of floods or storm damage. Nearly 200 flights were canceled.
In North Korea, Pyongyang's official Korean Central News Agency reported gale force winds and heavy rain in many parts of the country. Big rainstorms often mean catastrophe in the North because of poor drainage, deforestation and decrepit infrastructure.
North Korea is still trying to help people with food, shelter, health care and clean water after heavy flooding in July, according to a recent United Nations situation report. More than 170 died nationwide, and tens of thousands of homes were destroyed in the floods, according to official North Korean accounts.
Many flood victims still live in tents with limited access to water and other basic facilities, the U.N. report said, and there is worry about increased malnutrition in coming weeks. Seoul's Unification Ministry approved a trip Wednesday by two South Korean aid groups to visit the North Korean city of Kaesong for talks on flood aid.
Weather officials had warned that Bolaven would be the strongest typhoon to hit the region in several years, but its gusts weren't as powerful as predicted.
The typhoon hit the southern Japanese island of Okinawa on Monday, injuring four people but doing less damage than feared before moving off to sea. More than 75,000 households lost power.
Farther south, another typhoon, Tembin, doubled back and hit Taiwan three days after drenching the same region before blowing out to sea. Fierce winds and rain toppled coconut trees in the beach resort town of Hengchun.
In Manila, the Philippine weather agency reissued typhoon warnings to residents and fishermen for Tembin, which blew out of the archipelago over the weekend. Fishing boats in the north were urged not to venture out to sea while larger ships were warned of possible big waves and heavy rains.

Happiness is best achieved through living an ethical life. A good life is a happy life. Good relations and taking responsibility not only make a happy life possible; they are happiness itself.
?But good people aren?t always happy. Why? Because goodness is an ideal state; it something you aim at, a kind of moving target. Happiness may be achieved but mostly it is occasional and fleeting. Conditions change and you aim again. Even the best archer doesn?t always hit the bull?s-eye. External conditions make it easier to achieve happiness. For example, an archer is more likely to hit a target if she uses the best-made bow than if she used a poorly made bow. No one, though, has everything that is needed?peaceful times, perfect health, a just society, loving parents, caring teachers.
No one can be happy all the time. But you can approach happiness with a good family, a good friend, a good government, good enough possessions, and adequate health. The great archer with the inadequate bow will oust the incompetent archer with the latest and best equipment.
I accept Goethe?s comment, "I have come to the frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. I possess tremendous power to make life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration, I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. Happiness, while not possible all the time, is possible at least some of the time. More than that, you can look back on your life and say that you were happy. Happiness is the overall assessment of your life, not the episodic moments. It?s Seurat?s pointillist picture from a distance, not the dots up close.
True happiness is the gentle pulling away from yourself by which you find a better self that can prosper. Loving the right things and loving them in the right way is the key. Ethical relationships make it more likely than not that as you look back on your life you will be able to say, ?I have lived a good life.?
Still, there is something about happiness that is independent of virtue. This is the happiness that is found in the joy of existence, the delight in simply being. This can be experienced either with others or in moments of solitude. Which form it takes, I suppose, is a matter of temperament. Individual dispositions and upbringing will lead people to find happiness in different ways. Some are, by nature, social, others more solitary. I may find happiness in the company of people while you may prefer a walk in the woods. You may enjoy the quiet of a good book, or perhaps it is the conviviality of the dinner table you seek. Some love cities, others the countryside.
But whichever way you find happiness, it is always accompanied by love, for happiness is ultimately the love of life, the celebration of living. The mark of happiness is that you are sensitive to the world around you, that you acknowledge your dependence upon your surroundings and that you are filled with loving-kindness.
You want to take care of that which you love, and you are solicitous toward it. The person who finds happiness through love is the person who can be trusted to bring happiness to others. PARIS (AP) ? President Francois Hollande will present his foreign policy goals to France's ambassadors, with the Syrian crisis and terrorism in Africa's Sahel region on the agenda.
Hollande, who was elected in May, gets his first chance to outline his diplomatic vision in the president's annual speech to about 200 ambassadors.
A Hollande aide, speaking on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to give details of the president's speech before it was delivered, said Monday's address is likely to refer to Syria, the Sahel and EU integration among other things.
As for Syria, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said France would only intervene in the context of an international mandate. But he told RTL radio last week that talk of creating a "no-fly zone" will increase if the fighting continues.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Stroke is the fourth leading cause of death and a common cause of long-term disability in the United States, but doctors have very few proven treatment methods. Now a new device that mechanically removes stroke-causing clots from the brain is being hailed as a game-changer.
In a recent clinical trial, the SOLITAIRE Flow Restoration Device dramatically outperformed the standard mechanical treatment. Findings from the trial, called SOLITAIRE With the Intention for Thrombectomy (SWIFT), are published online August 26 in the journal The Lancet and will also appear in a later print edition of the journal.
SOLITAIRE, which was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in March, is among an entirely new generation of devices designed to remove blood clots from blocked brain arteries in patients experiencing an ischemic stroke. It has a self-expanding, stent-like design, and once inserted into a blocked artery using a thin catheter tube, it compresses and traps the clot. The clot is then removed by withdrawing the device, reopening the blocked blood vessel.
"This new device is significantly changing the way we can treat ischemic stroke," said the study's lead author, Dr. Jeffrey L. Saver, director of the UCLA Stroke Center and a professor of neurology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. "We are going from our first generation of clot-removing procedures, which were only moderately good in reopening target arteries, to now having a highly effective tool."
Results of the study showed that the device opened blocked vessels without causing symptomatic bleeding in or around the brain in 61 percent of patients. The standard FDA-approved mechanical device -- a corkscrew-type clot remover called the MERCI Retriever -- was effective in 24 percent of cases. The use of SOLITAIRE also led to better survival three months after a stroke. There was a 17.2 percent mortality rate with the new device, compared with a 38.2 percent rate with the older one.
About 87 percent of all strokes are caused by blood clots blocking a blood vessel supplying the brain. The stroke treatment that has received the most study is an FDA-approved clot-busting drug known as tissue plasminogen activator, but this drug must be given within four-and-a-half hours of the onset of stroke symptoms, and even more quickly in older patients.
When clot-busting drugs cannot be used or are ineffective, the clot can sometimes be mechanically removed during, or beyond, the four-and-a-half-hour window. The current study, however, did not compare mechanical clot removal to drug treatment.
For the trial, researchers randomly assigned 113 stroke patients at 18 hospitals to receive either SOLITAIRE or MERCI therapy within eight hours of stroke onset, between January 2010 and February 2011. The patients' average age was 67, and 68 percent were male. The time from the beginning of stroke symptoms to the start of the clot-retriever treatment averaged 5.1 hours. Forty percent of the patients had not improved with standard clot-busting medication prior to the study, while the remainder had not received it.
At the suggestion of a safety monitoring committee, the trial was ended nearly a year earlier than planned due to significantly better outcomes with the experimental device.
Other statistically significant findings included:
? 2 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had symptoms of bleeding in the brain, compared with 11 percent of MERCI patients.
? At the 90-day follow-up, overall adverse event rates, including bleeding in the brain, were similar for the two devices.
? 58 percent of SOLITAIRE-treated patients had good mental/motor functioning at 90 days, compared with 33 percent of MERCI patients.
? The SOLITARE device also opened more vessels when used as the first treatment approach, necessitating fewer subsequent attempts with other devices or drugs.

AMC Networks is taking its fight against Dish Network on the campaign trail. No longer content to run ads informing viewers the satellite cable provider no longer carries AMC, the network has introduced A. Zombie, an independent candidate who's running for president. His platform: to bring AMC Networks channels AMC, WE tv, IFC and Sundance Channel back to Dish subscribers.
The satellite cable provider dropped the AMC Networks' channels on July 1, indicating that the fees associated with a new contract to carry the channels wasn't a good value for subscribers. A source with ties to the situation told The Clicker at the time that despite Dish's claims, there have been no discussions between the two parties about fees.
The significance of the first undead presidential candidate ever? Well, besides the fact that he's hoping to make sure all not-exactly-dead creatures can watch the same popular shows, critically acclaimed zombie drama "The Walking Dead" is scheduled to kick off its new season on Oct. 14 on AMC. But for Dish subscribers, unless the satellite cable provider decides to carry AMC Networks again soon, there will be no highly anticipated season three for them. Subscribers have already missed out on the first half of the final season of "Breaking Bad."
From what Dish chairman Charlie Ergen has had to say about the dispute between the satellite cable provider and AMC Networks, fans shouldn't hold their breath. During a call with analysts earlier this month, Ergen said that AMC shows such as "Mad Men," "Breaking Bad" and "The Walking Dead" are "not viewed as much by our audience." As for the Dish subscribers who love those shows? "Our customers can go to iTunes," Ergen said.
And that's why Mr. Zombie is hitting the road to spread his message of equal viewing rights for all. He kicked off his campaign in San Diego on Monday, where zombies showed up to support him and his cause.

Zombie's wife, Patty, is supporting her husband and is joining him on his campaign trail. "He?s the right man to lead the fight to bring zombies to everyone in America, and he won?t stop -- even if it kills him again.?
Dish Network has not responded to a request for comment about Zombie's mission.
Zombie's next stops will be Dallas on Aug. 24, Atlanta on Sept. 1 and New York on Sept. 5. But that's not all. He'll also be hitting up the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, with stops in Tampa on Aug. 28 and Charlotte, N.C., Sept. 3-4.
