Violent Origin of Saturn's Oddball Moons Explained

Saturn's icy medium-size moons were born when a few much bigger satellites collided to form the ringed planet's huge moon Titan, a new study suggests.

The Saturn system started out with a family of several relatively large moons like the?Galilean satellites of Jupiter?(Ganymede, Europa, Callisto and Io), according to the new theory. But things changed with a few dramatic moon mergers, which created the Titan we know today and shed enough material to form satellites such as Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea and Iapetus, researchers said.

"We think that the giant planets got their satellites kind of like the sun got its planets, growing like miniature solar systems and ending with a stage of final collisions," lead author Erik Asphaug, of the University of California, Santa Cruz, said in a statement.

"In our model for the?Saturn?system, we propose that Titan grew in a couple of giant impacts, each one combining the masses of the colliding bodies, while shedding a small family of middle-sized moons," Asphaug added. [Photos: The Rings and Moons of Saturn]

Earth's moon is thought to have formed from a giant impact about 4.5 billion years ago. And just as the moon and Earth are geochemical twins, the half-dozen or so medium-size moons of Saturn are similar in composition to Titan's icy mantle, researchers said.

"Our model explains the diversity of these ice-rich moons and the evidence for their very active geology and dynamics," Asphaug said. "It also explains a puzzling fact about Titan, in that a giant impact would give it a high orbital eccentricity."

Both?Jupiter and Saturn?have more than 60 known moons, but many of them are quite small, measuring just a few miles across. Scientists think most of these "moonlets" are captured asteroids or minor planets, or their remnants.

Asphaug and co-author Andreas Reufer, of the University of Bern in Switzerland, modeled the giant impact scenario using computer simulations.

They found that mergers between bodies the size of Jupiter's Galilean moons ? which range from 1,940 miles (3,122 kilometers) wide in the case of Europa to 3,271 miles (5,264 km) across for Ganymede ? would rip icy material from the outer layers of the colliding satellites.

This stuff would form ice-rich spiral arms, which would then clump together by gravitational attraction and create Saturn's medium-size moons (which are generally a few hundred miles across).

"These satellite collisions are a regime that is not very well understood, so the modeling opens up new possibilities in general for planet formation," Reufer said.

The moon mergers may have happened long ago. Or they could be more recent phenomena spurred by gravitational disruption caused by a migrating giant planet such as Uranus or Neptune, researchers said.

"What makes the Saturn system so beautiful and unique could be its youth," Asphaug said. "While we don't have a preferred timeframe for this origin scenario to play out, it could have happened recently if something came along to destabilize the Saturn system, triggering the collisional mergers that formed Titan."

New observations from NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which has been studying the Saturn system since 2004, should help the researchers know if their model is on the right track, Asphaug said.

"Our model makes strong predictions for how Titan was assembled, what the middle-sized moons are made of, and how they started out as rapidly spinning clumps of ice-rich material," he said. "So it's testable. These little moons could provide the clues telling us what happened, and when."

Asphaug and Reufer will present their model Friday (Oct. 19) at the annual meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Reno, Nev. The new study will also be published in an upcoming issue of the journal Icarus.

Nintendo characters will stay exclusive to the WII U version of Scribblenauts Unlimited, the new entry in the Scribblenauts series by 5th cell. The series, starting with a DS game released in 2009 is known for its simple, pick up and play structure but also for the freedom the game grants the players to complete each stage: the Scribblenauts games are centered on creating objects of any kind to solve the stage puzzles by simple writing its name. There?s no ? right? way to complete each stage: for example, to reach an high platform you can create a jetpack or a plane or even a rocket!

Scribblenauts Unlimited slight changes the previous games? formula. This time the main character Maxwell will journey through a single but massive level with even more people to help and puzzles to solve. Multiplayer mode has also been improved: in the previous entries multiplayer mode was limited to sharing created levels with other players.In Scribblenauts Unlimited the developers added a two cooperative mode, alongside the level sharing feature.

Nintendo fans were definitely pleased with knowing that the presence of fan favorite Nintendo characters like Mario, Princess Peach, Link and Zelda would be in the game. Unfortunately 7th Cell has recently confirmed that these characters would be exclusive to the WII U version because of time costraints. The developers confirmed that the 3DS version was already completed and in production when Warner Bros, 7th Cell owners, signed the agreement with Nintendo

Scribblenauts Unlimited 3DS and PC versions will hit shelves on November 18. The Wii U version will come at a later date.

Id-Heren, the Kingdom

Landscape
Ylcea is not a terribly big continent, and the climate in Id-Heren is much the same as that of Spelheim. The land, on the other hand, is far less fertile, and water more scarce ? the vast majority of rivers draining from the Teeth flow south, away from Id-heren. Correspondingly, most of the trees in this country are coniferous evergreens.

The Teeth are a gigantic mountain chain of dark treacherous peaks, continuing some distance into the sea. The tips are always coated with a white layer of snow, while the lower slopes are inhabited by vicious dragons. Not many safe passages exist, and they shift with each passing of seasons. The existence of the Teeth is a mixed blessing to Id-Heren ? its troubles keep Spelheim at bay.

Id-Lotei, the capital city, is located in center of the kingdom, just north of the Teeth. Citians are allowed inside no more than Id-Heran people are allowed into the City, but if one were to compare the two capitals, they would immediately note how dark and dreary Id-Lotei appears in comparison. The buildings are built out of dark pine wood and stone, and even the majestic royal palace was built out of somber Teeth rock. Contrary to appearances however, Id-Lotei is an industrious city, permeated with the noise of iron striking iron, and the stink of progression.

A hidden settlement is situated at the base of the mountains on the northern side, where hunters and scholars and soldiers have toiled for many decades in their efforts to domesticate dragons. It has only recently started to bear fruit. Id-Heren breeders are now confident enough to claim their dragons do not eat humans. They neglect to report that the beasts still like to, given half the chance.

Dragons
The dragons of Ylcea are vicious beasts the size of approximately four horses. Their fangs and claws are sharp as swords, and their powerful jaws can part a man in half with ease. The scales of the fully-grown are tough as hardened leather, and vary wildly in color. It was once thought that the beasts were immortal due to their astounding regenerative capacity ? a particular dragon was observed to grow back a complete wing over the course of a winter.

Dragons show no great intelligence, and certainly not speech. They do not breathe fire. Very few are born with wings, but these flyers have struck terror in Id-Heran (adj.) citizens for generations. If a human raises a dragon from the moment of its birth, that dragon may recognize that human as its own kind instead of prey. This is a very rare occurrence, and the dragon will still be vicious toward others.

Perhaps the most curious thing about dragons is their innate resistance to magic ? or specifically, their ability to absorb a spell?s mana before it can manifest in the world. Any magic cast near a dragon will fizzle out, and this characteristic is present to a lesser degree in their crystal-like bones, which the craftsmen of Id-Heren fashion into all manners of weaponry and charms. It is a coveted material, as the bones gradually degenerate after the dragon?s death. The breeders have found that absorbing mana reverses this decay.

People
Due to a lack of resources, Id-Heren is not as densely populated as its southern neighbor. The people live in close-knit communities, united against adversity. They possess blond or brown hair, and in general, a more subtle facial build than Citians.

Some Socharev may be found in Id-Heren, but it is not often that they brave the mountains.

Government and politics
Id-Heren is ruled by a sole monarch advised by his royal counselors. The current ruler is the 21st Saint King, and is a sovereign with a fair and merciful rule. All in his family line were worshiped by his people, but few were loved so. The northern King relentlessly expends his efforts for the sake of his country, and next to governing affairs, he has made modest contributions to the furthering of Id-Heran metalcraft.

Only the Saint King?s prayers will be heard by the Id-Heran God. Prayer by commoners is directed to their sovereign. The northern Church preaches its prophecies, but even without that, the people realize full well how the quality of life in Id-Heren rises with each generation. That fact means more to most than any amount of scripture. There is a single prophecy every Id-Herans trusts in: that it will one day throw off the yoke of its oppressors.

There are a number noble houses in Id-Heren, and each is given a province of the land to govern. Most station a number of courtiers at the capital, while the heads and direct heirs only attend the capital during the biyearly Moot.

Technology
Id-Heren is arguably more technologically advanced than Spelheim. Their understanding of gunpowder is superior, and some soldiers are trained with hand cannons instead of crossbows, primarily for intimidation. A woodblock printing press is in an early stage of development, and Id-Heran medicine trumps that of the City by far. The long history of systematic dissection and study of magic-capable bodies have granted the Northerners valuable information on the human body, though little on magic.

Analysis: Italian firms fight to hold head above political water

BOLOGNA, Italy (Reuters) - It's not long into a chat with an Italian businessmen before talk turns to how a costly state is sucking the air out of Europe's third-largest economy, endangering the euro along the way.

"In the end we're asking for only one thing: a normal government for a normal country," said Maurizio Marchesini, the president of Confindustria, Italy's main employers' association, in the wealthy north-central region of Emilia-Romagna.

Emilia-Romagna, of which Bologna is the capital, is doing better than much of Italy. It is one of the top 10 industrial regions of Europe, home to companies such as Ferrari and pasta giant Barilla, and seems to be largely free of organized crime.

Clusters of mainly medium-sized firms in engineering, packaging, food processing and ceramics are a reminder that, despite a government debt burden hovering at 120 percent of annual output, Italy is Europe's second-largest manufacturer.

Yet all is not well. Italy is in recession and few expect growth to resume before 2014. Exporters are coping, sometimes flourishing, but many firms that depend on the domestic market are floundering, even in defensive sectors such as food, said Giampiero Bergami, a banker for Unicredit.

Sales and profitability are under assault. "Gloomy would be putting it mildly. We are witnessing a constant contraction of both top lines and margins," Bergami said.

HIGH COSTS

Household consumption is at a post-war low, depressed by tax rises and spending cuts that Prime Minister Mario Monti, a technocrat, has forced through to rein in Rome's budget deficit.

Entrepreneurs respect Monti, who has said he would be willing to stay on if elections next spring produced a deadlock. But if businessmen are doing well, they say this is in spite of the state, not thanks to it.

Marchesini, who runs a successful packaging firm, lists his complaints. The inflexible labor market is "quite impossible for a foreigner to understand"; red tape is so bad it takes at least a year to open a factory; and then there are punishing taxes, poor infrastructure and the high cost of credit.

Companies have long said they are reluctant to recruit staff even in good times because labor laws make it hard to shed workers if their business turns down.

Confindustria estimates the political malaise is responsible for 2 percentage points of the risk premium of more than 3.2 points over German debt that investors demand to hold 10-year Italian bonds, which now yield about 4.8 percent.

Because government bond yields set the benchmark for corporate borrowing costs, Marchesini is paying interest of 4-5 percent despite rising turnover and a good credit rating. That puts him at a big disadvantage to his German competitors.

"So you can imagine it's hard to make big investments. Of course I haven't stopped investing in development and new machinery. But, for example, to buy a new building is a real problem," he said. "It's very difficult to obtain a mortgage."

Government borrowing costs have also become an indicator of the wider euro zone crisis. At the moment, attention is focused on Spain and Greece, but if Italy does not show soon that it is getting to grips with its problems, the country could be next in line to shake the 17-nation currency union.

ASIA VERSUS ITALY

For Eraldo Poletto, the outgoing managing director of Furla, a family-owned maker of luxury leather goods based in Bologna, ever-changing laws, bureaucracy and high taxes are undermining what he says is an old entrepreneurial spirit in Italy.

Speaking during a business trip to India, Poletto contrasted what he called Asia's amazing desire to succeed to Italy's constant concern to preserve past gains. "Here they want to win; we in Italy are afraid to lose the privileges we have. We need a wake-up call," he said from Mumbai.

Domestic carmaker Fiat has frozen a multi-billion-euro investment plan in Italy because of poor market conditions and competition from low-cost production outside Europe, while Alcoa Inc is shutting its Italian aluminum smelter in Sardinia largely due to high energy costs.

Energy is also one of the problems facing the ceramic tiles sector, which has struggled to recover from a slump in 2008. It costs 50 percent more than the European average, especially for industrial users, because of limited competition, according to the International Monetary Fund.

"We're at one of the lowest points in our history," said Franco Manfredini, head of the ceramics employers' association in the town of Sassuolo, where 80 percent of Italy's tiles are produced. "We have to become a serious country."

To make up for a slide in domestic sales, which were down 16 percent in the first half of the year, local tile makers are opening factories abroad, emphasizing innovation and exporting more. Tiles from Sassuolo, an hour's drive from Bologna, clad Brisbane airport and Riyadh's biggest shopping mall.

BAD REPUTATION

Mauro Sacchetto, the chief executive of Datalogic, a leading producer of bar code readers, says a succession of governments has neglected the sort of cooperation in research between industry and universities that his company enjoys in Vietnam, where it opened a plant in 2009 that now employs 600.

"Italy's reputation is due to a lack of credible, reliable politicians. We have enough of an industrial culture to prove that we are much better than our political and banking reputation," Sacchetto said.

Bologna-based Datalogic has three research centers but just two small factories in Italy, which account for only 9 percent of the fast-growing firm's global sales.

Italy's economy has barely expanded in a decade, and Morgan Stanley reckons its potential growth - the rate at which output can rise consistently without generating inflation - may be now just 0.5 percent a year. Only Greece, the bank noted in a report, scores worse among mature economies on a range of World Bank indicators assessing the ease of doing business.

NO LAZY EXCUSE

Blaming politics sounds like a lazy excuse for this abysmal performance, but Stefano Zamagni, an economics professor at the University of Bologna, said the political system truly was at the heart of Italy's economic problems.

After a decade of carefree government spending in the 1980s, Italy needed restraint and reform. Instead, a crumbling of the post-war political order in 1992 led to the emergence of parties based on individuals, notably three-times prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, rather than by ideology.

Since then, Zamagni said, Italy had suffered increasing rent-seeking - the term for how groups or individuals use their clout for economic gain without benefiting society.

About 1.5 million civil servants, put on the payroll by vote-seeking politicians, extract a bureaucratic rent because they are literally unproductive. Other examples include financial speculation, tax evasion and corruption, he said.

Zamagni estimates total rents at a third of annual output, eating into wages and profits, and sapping the economy. "When rents are high, salaries are lower than they should be; hence effective demand is lower. And unless you increase the profit share, then of course companies will not invest," he said.

MIXED MESSAGES

But Zamagni believed Italians were getting fed up. He said he sensed Italy was approaching the "bottom of the curve" as voters realized they shared the blame for Italy's woes.

The country had also demonstrated its ability in the past to pick itself up, notably after World War Two. "Italians show the best of their nature when they're under stress," he said. "That is why I am moderately optimistic about the near future."

At Furla, Poletto questioned whether Italy was ready for the "cultural revolution" he said was needed. Voters, including entrepreneurs, had only themselves to blame for electing politicians like Berlusconi whom they now scorn.

"They are there because we vote for them. And then we complain about it? Shame on us!" he said.

Emilio Mussini, chairman of Panariagroup, a big ceramics manufacturer based in Sassuolo employing 1,700, said he also sensed change was in the air; Italians were realizing that the country had been living beyond its means.

"If you speak to people in the street or in the caf?, there is a new awareness," he said. "We're becoming conscious for the first time that we need to change our model."

At Confindustria, Marchesini begged to differ, saying businessmen had no clear view of what lay ahead.

Asked whether he was confident the political environment in the coming decade would be better for the economy, Marchesini replied without hesitation: "We need to have good government within the next five years, not in 10 - that would be too late for our economy."

Life, Videogames, and Relationships: Finding the Balance :: Zelda ...

One struggle that reared it?s head just the other day when it came to Fifa 13 is the balance of Videogames and Relationships. Beyond that, there is an entire world out there of work, family, and the like which I refer to as ?life?.? This is something I struggle with almost on a daily basis when it comes to balancing it all so every facet is satisfied. Although, it?s not merely about satisfying those around us, but also making sure we are happy as well. There are all sorts of gamers out there, and not every situation I present from my personal experience will necessarily resonate with every gamer, but it still points out the importance of Life, Love, and Gaming.

I?ve been a gamer for 21 years. I started with Punch-Out on the NES all the way to my most recent games played in Mists of Pandaria, Madden 2013, and Dishonored (Last Nintendo game was New Super Mario Bros. 2). I?ve logged likely ?a couple years? in terms of total time playing games. There was a year in a half in my life where I literally just played World of Warcraft. I had barely any friends, I did shower and eat, but I didn?t really live much of a life outside of the computer.

I still do marathons once in awhile, specifically when reviewing a game. I took time off and dedicated three days of my life to finish Skyward Sword. But I must admit that it?s hard indeed to find time to Game, to watch Sports (I?m a big sports fan), to spend time with my Girlfriend, and time to work and do things with the family.

Now, for some people it?s easier. It?s no secret that women play videogames, and if you can find one that is everything you ever wanted and happens to play the same games you do than more power to you. Or someone who likes the same sports as you do? even better. That alone alleviates most of the issues relationships have with gamers. Because you can spend quality time with your Girlfriend or Boyfriend while playing games or watching sports. My girlfriend, presently, doesn?t enjoy either.

That?s not to say we haven?t played New Super Mario Bros. Wii together, or some Just Dance 3. Of course we have. Heck, she made sure I had a second controller for the Xbox 360 so she could play against me in Madden. But there is a clear distinction between her as a gamer and myself. Personally, I could play a few hours of games every day. Heck, I could play all day if left to it. She can?t. Maybe once a week, maybe for an hour.

Many relationships get strained by video game players who don?t make time for their spouse. The sad part, of course, is those gamers don?t want to make time. They have more fun playing a game than being with their lover. Scary.

Back in my year and half straight of playing World of Warcraft, I found my way into one of the top guilds in America: Imperative (at the time anyways).? The GM at the time, Blacksen, was a pretty cool dude. He knew everything there was to know about WoW. He was abrasive and an extremely aggressive raid leader. We all fed off of him to get the very best out of every player. It was a no nonsense guild. Newbies can replace long time vets if they outperform them on day one. This sort of pressure kept everyone on the top of their game.

He was always on. I thought I played WoW a lot (logging 12 to 16 hours a day), but he was always on not only for the duration of me being on, but before and after. I didn?t have a job, he did. I didn?t have a girlfriend?? he had a fianc?. The amount of time he found to play WoW astonished me.

He?s at work, presumably a tech support type job, and he?s logged into WoW. He still performed his job (people idle all the time in WoW while doing other things), but clearly he was great at splitting his mind between being a GM and knowing all, and still getting his required work done. Long story short, he never made time for his fianc?, and she broke up with him after giving him an ultimatum when it came to WoW. It was essentially ?you can still raid, but after that you?re done you come be with me?. He chose World of Warcraft. Seems insane right? Well, turns out it happens a lot. People choose a video game over their lover, because to them the game is more fun than a relationship. It certainly was for me that year and a half I lost.

I have a lot of fun playing video games. I probably always will. It?s just part of my DNA. However, after reexamining my life it turns out that while games are fun, it?s my relationship with others that makes me happy. Presently, I?m in a very serious relationship with who I feel is the love of my life. One smile from her and I am more happy than I am at any point playing a video game. Watching a sport.? Hell even masturbating. That smile is an amazing thing, and I try to live every day to make her smile as much as possible.

If I could, I would spend every waking hour holding her in my arms. But there is an itch. I long to play a video game. I have to turn that Packer game on every Sunday (or Thursday? or Monday). I still play Fantasy Football. So then the question becomes how do I enjoy everything in my life, including the things that she doesn?t prefer doing, while still maintaining a nice balanced life?

It wasn?t easy at first, but it?s second nature now. I go to work 8 to 4pm Monday through Friday. I have weekends off, and while ideal to maybe play some games, I instead dedicate my weekends to my girlfriend. Why not? I love her, and we have so much fun together. I happen to live with her too, so we do see each-other quite a bit.

Once I am done with work, I come home and spend another 2 hours working on ZI roughly an extra 10 hours or a so a week. That doesn?t count the times I sneak away during work to get a few things done as well. I?ll watch a movie with my girlfriend on the couch, she goes to bed, and I stay up for about another 30 minutes. In that 30 minutes I play a game of my choice. I know 30 minutes doesn?t seem like much, but that?s 2 and half hours a week. Casual playtime? Maybe, but there is nothing casual about what I am playing. Skyrim, Dishonored? it may take awhile but I will beat those games. I still get my days here and there to game more. Sometimes after work the girlfriend is out with her friends, maybe she?s with family. So naturally I am going to play some games. Some days she is gone most the day (even on a weekend), naturally, it?s game time.

May seem odd when you look at it like that, but if she?s around I would rather spend time with her, but if she isn?t? why not play games? They are fun after all. Of course I am slowly getting her interested in gaming, and there may be a day we play games together more often, but for now I found a great balance. She still gets most of my attention, but she is understanding that I enjoy working on ZI I?m going to do that. She knows I enjoy sports, enjoy video games, and she understands that I?m going to play them.

She understands me. I still spend some time with my parents for dinner and such here and there. I still usually find one night a week to go out and spend time with friends. Maybe that?s not as frequent as it was when I was younger (you know, where you spend every day with your friends)? but I?m an adult now. I have a wonderful girlfriend, a beautiful and amazing daughter, a family really.

I still have friends. I still hang out with them. Just not like I did back during High-school. That?s the way the adult world works ? you still have the same time you did when you were younger, but you have more important things to worry about. My family comes first, and I enjoy being with them more than anything. Then comes my time with friends and none immediate family, and lastly my hobby of ZI, Videogames, and Sports. I find time to make it all work in my constantly busy and evolving life.

It?s sad that some, like Blacksen, like the UK Fifa players, put more emphasis on video games than reality. I?ve been there, and it never brought me true happieness. Video games are a lot of fun, but they shouldn?t actually BE your life. Just a part of it.

[Brown University] The cabin of a spacecraft halfway to Mars would be the least convenient place -- one cannot say "on earth" -- for a Salmonella or Pneumococcus outbreak, but a wide-ranging new paper suggests that microgravity and prolonged space flight could give unique advantages to germs. What's a space agency to do? Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital infectious disease expert Dr. Leonard Mermel offers several ideas.

And no, they are not to add more Vitamin C to the Tang, or to give each crew member a bottle of Purell. It's a lot more complicated than that.

"I've been involved for two decades with trying to prevent infections in the intensive care unit and general hospital settings and I've been involved with national and international guidelines, but there are a lot of constraints in space I had never thought of before," said Mermel, who began investigating the infectious disease implications of space flight when he was invited to speak at a NASA-Johnson Space Center symposium in April 2011.

In all, he said, he's read hundreds of papers and he cited 91of them in the peer-reviewed article published online Oct. 9 in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. He also has consulted widely with experts including Duane Pierson, Chief Microbiologist, Space Life Sciences at the Johnson center.

What Mermel has distilled from the literature is that microgravity weakens the immune system in some ways while it also increases the virulence and antimicrobial resistance of some microorganisms. Meanwhile, without gravity, germs launched by coughs and sneezes no longer fall to the ground within an earthly 3-6 feet, but continue to float around, increasing the distance and time for astronauts to inhale them, or for them to settle on a wider variety of surfaces.

"So you suppress the human immune response, and you enhance the ability of microbes to cause infection, and you put those together in a confined space where airborne particles can remain in the air for a protracted period of time," Mermel said.

What's more, in a spacecraft, power limitations prevent extensive air filtration and the air is recirculated. That means astronauts can't use some hospital disinfectants and hand hygiene products because they could emit hazardous vapors. And like a college dorm room or bathroom, many surfaces in the closed quarters of a spaceship can become contaminated, serving as reservoirs for germs that can spread in this unique environment, Mermel said.

To some extent there is hard data on the risk of infectious disease on space missions. Mermel found NASA statistics showing that there have been 29 reported infectious disease incidents among 742 crew members on 106 space shuttle flights. Although the number is limited, human space flight to Mars would be unprecedented because of the prolonged nature of the mission. Mermel argues that it is unclear if this will introduce a risk of infection beyond what one might extrapolate from shorter missions.

"It's going to be radically different in terms of the ability to communicate with someone on Earth," he said. "And what if there was something that happened that put someone at risk? Could they, or would they, turn around before they accomplished their mission?"

Prescriptions for prevention

In the context of prolonged space flight, Mermel said, the best strategy could be to enhance the considerable prevention methods NASA already has in place. Many of Mermel's ideas therefore focus on preparing and equipping astronauts and their crafts to either keep microbes from getting on board, or failing that, to keep them in their place.

Among NASA's current measures are vaccinating astronauts for several diseases, including the flu, and screening for others, such as tuberculosis, Mermel said. Food is selectively irradiated and astronauts have disinfecting wipes, surgical masks and respirators. They take off with multiple antibiotics on board.

Vaccinations, he says, could be expanded to include germs like Meningococcus and Pneumoccocus. And because no new germs are going to join the astronauts on board once they take off (assuming none are brought back from Mars), expanded pre-flight screening may help, too. Astronauts could be screened in multiple body sites for all strains of Staphyloccocus aureus, including some antibiotic-resistant forms, he said, and stool could be screened and re-screened for Salmonella.

Mermel said astronauts could also receive formal infection control education regarding hand hygiene, environmental cleaning, and other healthy practices.

Finding a way to somehow work HEPA air filtration into the energy budget would be a worthwhile goal if possible, he said. Perhaps with the opportunity afforded by NASA's transition from the space shuttle to a new craft, engineers could also perform human factors engineering studies on the most health-promoting places to put water outlets and waterless hand hygiene product dispensers. Potable water outlets and toilets, he said, could be designed to operate with foot pedals.

And a new bit of cargo, he added, which NASA is working on, is easy to use, low-energy diagnostic testing kits for germs causing common infections.

Other than the astronauts and research animals, another source of germs could be the astronauts' food. One of the toughest calls NASA will need to make, he said, is whether to irradiate more food for a longer trip. It's a good idea to kill harmful pathogens wherever they may be but it's unnatural for people to eat completely sterilized food for two straight years since some of the bacteria we typically eat end up in our guts where they have beneficial effects.

"We've evolved to have those microbes go into our gastrointestinal tracts, our immune system interacts with them and is stimulated by them and it's part of our homeostatic mechanism," Mermel said.

Still to explore

That conundrum of cuisine is one of six unanswered questions Mermel poses in the paper. The others concern whether infectious disease risk really is higher in microgravity (research suggests this, but it hasn't been directly measured); what the best antimicrobial coating is, if any, for spaceship surfaces; the best hand sanitizer for use in space; which diagnostic tests to bring on board; and elucidating why, exactly, immune response drops and microbial virulence goes up in space.

But if NASA announced tomorrow that in the next few years astronauts would be headed off to Mars, Mermel said he'd be confident that NASA planning would allow them to make the journey without a viral, fungal or bacterial tragedy.

"It would remain a risk, but I'd feel comfortable with it," he said. "They have a lot of bright people invested in doing the right thing."
