Health insurance to soar to nearly ?500 a month for high earners

Tuesday 30 October 2012

People earning more than ?70,000 a year will have to pay ?482 per month in health insurance fees when the new cabinet?s system comes into force, according to calculations by Nos television.

The broadcaster says people on welfare benefits will have to pay around ?20 a month, slightly less than they pay now when health insurance benefit of up to ?70 is taken into account.

The Nos bases its calculations on information contained in the coalition accord that was presented to the public on Monday. Health insurance benefit will be scrapped when the new system is launched in 2014.

Average earnings

People on an average salary of around ?33,000 a year will have to pay ?140 per month, Nos calculates.

The increase will be partly compensated for by lower tax rates. This means high earners will pay some ?126 less in tax per month while those on an average salary will get back ?50, which fully covers the higher insurance cost.

Stef Blok, who negotiated the agreement on behalf of the right-wing VVD and is tipped to become housing minister in the new cabinet, admitted premiums will go up sharply for some people. ?A coalition agreement is a question of give and take,? he told the broadcaster.

Labour leader Diederik Samsom said it is fair to ask some people to pay more, and emphasised that tax cuts will help pay for the increase.

Own risk

The Nos report did not say what the likely effect would be of an income-dependent own risk element, which the government also plans to introduce.

Many people currently opt for a maximum own risk payment of up to ?700 which cuts their basic monthly premium to around ?70 a month.

Should the better off pay higher health insurance premiums. Have your say using the comment box below.

Op-Ed: ?Our Schools Have Ignored the Flight of Great Teachers?

Recently, many of the nation?s leading education experts gathered with classroom teachers to discuss the state of education in America at the annual Education Nation summit in New York. The conversation raised some valuable insights about the future of our schools and in particular, how to ensure we have great teachers in every classroom.

As a 33-year veteran teacher, I still feel as passionate as ever about my profession. However, I have serious concerns about our nation?s ability to keep talented educators in the classroom after three years, let alone three decades.

During my career, I?ve seen many great teachers leave the classroom while still in their prime. Most hadn?t grown tired of teaching. Instead, they left because they didn?t get the recognition they deserve from their schools or from the district. They left because they didn?t see opportunities to advance their careers.

They left because they were being neglected.

More: Op-Ed: ?What We Are Asking of Beginning Teachers Is Not Sustainable?

A study from TNTP, a national nonprofit that focuses on teacher quality, puts a spotlight on this urgent problem. Called ?The Irreplaceables,? the study finds that the nation?s 50 largest school districts are losing approximately 10,000 great teachers every year that they could have kept. This leads to disastrous consequences for students and schools.

According to the study, when one ?Irreplaceable? leaves a low-achieving school, it can take 11 hires to find just one teacher of comparable quality. Meanwhile, many principals let their best teachers walk out the door without trying to keep them. Two-thirds of the top teachers TNTP surveyed said nobody at their school even asked them to come back for another year.

The study also shows that outdated policies make it harder for schools to hold on to great teachers. In particular, most districts don?t offer leadership roles to the most successful teachers.

Sadly, some policies actually cause our schools to lose irreplaceable teachers without considering their talents. Over the past several years, as budget cuts have forced layoffs in school districts across the country, seniority rules have dictated that the newest teachers be the first to lose their jobs, regardless of their performance. As a result, our public schools, and particularly those in disadvantaged neighborhoods, have lost some great educators who will never return to the classroom. We need to replace blind policies like these so that new and veteran teachers know that their performance matters.

When our public school system fails to consider the needs of our students and the performance of our teachers, we risk squandering our most precious resources?the limitless potential of our students and the irreplaceable talents of effective teachers.

But with a new year comes new opportunities to change the direction of our schools and focus on what?s best for our students.

First, we need to come together and negotiate meaningful, multi-measured evaluation systems for teachers in each and every district, one that gives teachers the feedback and support they need to succeed in the classroom.

Nothing is more frustrating to teachers than inheriting students who spent the previous year languishing in the classroom of an ineffective colleague.

Better evaluation would allow us to recognize and learn from our most talented teachers, support those who struggle and want to improve, and provide a mechanism for counseling out teachers who aren?t a good fit for this challenging and important craft. Nothing is more frustrating to teachers than inheriting students who spent the previous year languishing in the classroom of an ineffective colleague. And nothing destroys school culture faster than the feeling that some of your colleagues aren?t advancing a mission of academic excellence for kids.

In addition, we should collaborate on expanding opportunities for teachers to take on more leadership roles in their schools. TNTP found that creating opportunities for career advancement is one of the most promising ways to get the best teachers to stay.

I know career opportunity matters because it?s what has kept me in the classroom for so long. When the Los Angeles Unified School District began piloting teacher-designed schools that had more autonomy, I jumped at the chance to create my own school. I worked with a team of teachers to create the blueprint for New Open World Academy, a public school nestled inside the historic Robert F. Kennedy Complex in Los Angeles. It was a fantastic experience that rejuvenated and reinforced my commitment to public education.

However, my situation is unfortunately an exception to the norm for many of our nations teachers. Our schools have ignored the flight of great teachers and instead upheld outdated policies that do not help us raise achievement levels for children or keep irreplaceable talent in the classroom. It?s time for the leaders convening at Education Nation and in school districts across the country to take the common sense steps that will keep more of the best teachers where they belong: in the classroom.

Astronomers report that dark matter 'halos' may contain stars, disprove other theories

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Could it be that dark matter "halos" -- the huge, invisible cocoons of mass that envelop entire galaxies and account for most of the matter in the universe -- aren't completely dark after all but contain a small number of stars? Astronomers from UCLA, UC Irvine and elsewhere make a case for that in the Oct. 25 issue of the journal Nature.

Astronomers have long disagreed about why they see more light in the universe than it seems they should -- that is, why the infrared light they observe exceeds the amount of light emitted from known galaxies.

When looking at the cosmos, astronomers have seen what are neither stars nor galaxies nor a uniform dark sky but mysterious, sandpaper-like smatterings of light, which UCLA's Edward L. (Ned) Wright refers to as "fluctuations." The debate has centered around what exaclty the source of those fluctuations is.

One explanation is that the fluctuations in the background are from very distant unknown galaxies. A second is that they're from unknown galaxies that are not so far away, faint galaxies whose light has been traveling to us for only 4 billion or 5 billion years (a rather short time in astronomy terms). In the Nature paper, Wright and his colleagues present evidence that both these explanations are wrong, and they propose an alternative.

The first explanation -- that the fluctuations are from very distant galaxies -- is nowhere close to being supported by the data the astronomers present from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, said Wright, a UCLA professor of physics and astronomy.

"The idea of not-so-far-away faint galaxies is better, but still not right," he added. "It's off by a factor of about 10; the 'distant galaxies' hypothesis is off by a factor of about 1,000."

Wright and his colleagues, including lead author Asantha Cooray, a UC Irvine professor of physics and astronomy, contend that the small number of stars that were kicked to the edges of space during violent collisions and mergers of galaxies may be the cause of the infrared light "halos" across the sky and may explain the mystery of the excess emitted infrared light.

As crashing galaxies became gravitationally tangled with one another, "orphaned" stars were tossed into space. It is these stars, the researchers say, that produce the diffuse, blotchy scatterings of light emitted from the galaxy halos that extend well beyond the outer reaches of galaxies.

"Galaxies exist in dark matter halos that are much bigger than the galaxies; when galaxies form and merge together, the dark matter halo gets larger and the stars and gas sink to the middle of the the halo," said Wright, who holds UCLA's David Saxon Presidential Chair in Physics. "What we're saying is one star in a thousand does not do that and instead gets distributed like dark matter. You can't see the dark matter very well, but we are proposing that it actually has a few stars in it -- only one-tenth of 1 percent of the number of stars in the bright part of the galaxy. One star in a thousand gets stripped out of the visible galaxy and gets distributed like the dark matter.

"The dark matter halo is not totally dark," Wright said. "A tiny fraction, one-tenth of a percent, of the stars in the central galaxy has been spread out into the halo, and this can produce the fluctuations that we see."

In large clusters of galaxies, astronomers have found much higher percentages of intra-halo light, as large as 20 percent, Wright said.

For this study, Cooray, Wright and colleagues used the Spitzer Space Telescope to produce an infrared map of a region of the sky in the constellation Bo?tes. The light has been travelling to us for 10 billion years.

"Presumably this light in halos occurs everywhere in the sky and just has not been measured anywhere else," said Wright, who is also principal investigator of NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission.

"If we can really understand the origin of the infrared background, we can understand when all of the light in the universe was produced and how much was produced," Wright said. "The history of all the production of light in the universe is encoded in this background. We're saying the fluctuations can be produced by the fuzzy edges of galaxies that existed at the same time that most of the stars were created, about 10 billion years ago."

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation, NASA and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Future research, especially with the James Webb Space Telescope, should provide further insights, Wright said.

"What we really need to be able to do is to see and identify the galaxies that are producing all the light in the infrared background," he said. "That could be done to a much greater extent once the James Webb Space Telescope is operational because it will be able to see much more distant, fainter galaxies."

MoPub Drops Its Price For Ad Network Mediation To Zero

mopub logoIt's the one-year anniversary of MoPub's marketplace for real-time bidding on mobile ads,?and the company is celebrating by eliminating the cost for publishers to participate. CEO Jim Payne told me that the company wants to encourage as many publishers to use the MoPub Marketplace as possible. After all, he said real-time bidding is "a better way of doing things," and bringing more ad inventory into the system means MoPub can make more money from advertisers. And yes, some publishers have declined to participate in the marketplace because the current costs are too high. For example, Payne estimated that under MoPub's current pricing structure, a mid-sized publisher seeing 500 million ad impressions a month could end up paying $25,000.

LG Optimus G comes with locked bootloader, might not be cause for panic

LG Optimus G for Olleh, AT&T and Sprint

We're fans of the LG Optimus G, although the custom ROM lovers among us might want to tamp down their expectations after this. We've confirmed comments to Android Central that the late 2012 flagship has a locked bootloader much like the Optimus 4X HD and Optimus Vu that went before it -- any serious experimentation with a typical carrier variant could at least require jumping through some hoops, if it's possible at all. It might not matter much for the sort who cares about bootloaders, though. If statements by other LG staffers are more than just wishful thinking, there could be a Nexus variant of the Optimus G next week that's as good as a blank slate for modders.

Finding Your M.O. | Part 10: Building the Team | BoF ? The Business ...

Source: extreme-adventure.co.uk

Finding Your M.O. is an on-going series on The Business of Fashion penned by ?slaug Magn?sd?ttir, co-founder and?CEO?of Moda Operandi, on her experience at the helm of a fashion-technology start-up. Last time, in Part 9, we looked at customer acquisition. Today, we examine how to build a great team.

NEW?YORK, United States ??To build a successful business you need to have the right team in place. But what constitutes the right team? And how and when should it change and grow? Who are the key people you need at the concept phase? At the launch phase? At the scale phase? Who do you keep? Who do you let go?

These are the tricky questions I asked myself often in the early days of Moda Operandi (M?O). Getting the team right is not easy. It?s a careful balance between talent and timing, needs and ?nice to haves.?

Here?s how I went about team building during key stages of the company?s growth and lessons learned along the way.

Phase 1: Finding a Partner

My first step was to find a partner and co-founder. While not every start-up requires a partner, it was important for me to bring in somebody who understood the concept and would complement my skill set. With a highly attuned aesthetic sensibility to complement my business acumen, I knew Lauren Santo Domingo would be the perfect partner. When she agreed, I was thrilled ? and the team had just doubled in size.

If you think you need a partner, making the right choice is perhaps the most critical decision you will make for your business. Take your time to find somebody you really think will give your business the best shot at succeeding. Beyond filling holes that you may have, a good partner tends to share your uncompromising passion and conviction for the concept. A good partner keeps a thick skin and a cool head that helps survive long, late hours and fend off stress and criticism. A good partner stands side by side with you, in the best of times and in the toughest of times.

Phase 2: Getting the Product Live

Unless you are an engineer yourself, one of the most bedevilling challenges any internet start-up?CEO?faces is how to attract in the right technology talent in order to get the product live. It?s something of a catch-22, as good engineers are in such high demand that they command high salaries and often prefer to join businesses with a proven concept and cash, while you need someone to get the product live before you can prove your concept and raise money.

Knowing this, one of the smartest things you can do is find a partner who is technical. In fact, many investors will shy away from investing in a start-up if one of the founders is not an engineer, as the proof is ultimately in the product and they want someone with skin in the game to oversee the actual build.

Since neither Lauren nor I had a technical background, however, this was a real gap in our team and a significant challenge. We had limited resources in the early days and knew we had to keep the team lean. But we also knew we needed to move fast and launch the product.

As we aimed to go live by New York Fashion Week in February of 2011 (which was just a few months away), we decided to parallel track two approaches: recruiting a chief technology officer (CTO), while simultaneously hiring in an external agency to start building our platform. To be clear, this was not ideal, as Lauren and I lacked the technical expertise to really assess prospective CTOs and agency proposals. But we asked people for advice and recommendations and ultimately went with our gut and hired an agency whose engineers seemed really smart.

We were lucky. The agency did a great job for us, putting the early platform in place. Then we got lucky again: 5 months into our search, we found a?CTO. With the combined around-the-clock efforts of the agency and our new?CTO, we were able to deliver a functional site on time for our Fashion Week deadline.

Phase 3: Proving the Concept

Now that you?re live, with perhaps a couple of partners, a technology lead and some external support, the team issue becomes even more complicated. You?ve burned through cash to get the site up and running and you need to prove the concept to raise more money. But proving the concept requires a bigger team. Who do you hire with the money you have left to get the business to the next level and the investors back to the table?

M?O launched in February 2011 and had just enough cash in the bank to survive until May. So we decided we had to keep the team extremely lean. Just before launch, we hired a chief marketing officer to acquire customers, a producer to handle our photo shoots, a merchandising assistant to write product descriptions, an editorial assistant to write content for our magazine and a couple of customer care experts-cum-stylists to work with our customers. We figured these roles were essential. Everyone else was freelance. We took on interns. We all crowded into a tiny office space and plugged away.

We went live at 12.20pm on February 16th with our very first trunk show: Alexander Wang Fall/Winter 2011. Lauren made the first purchase, a dress and puffer jacket. I made the second, a knit sweater. Then, we waited. For the first three days orders were really slow. Trickles only. Those were a tough few days. I wondered whether we had been wrong about the whole viability of the concept. I didn?t sleep and was obsessed with staring at the site and our (lack of) sales. Then we realised that a small user interface issue was making the shopping experience confusing. We made a quick fix on the fourth day and the orders started flooding in. In fact, our first two months of sales were so strong that we were able to quickly raise a second round of financing significantly larger than our first.

The takeaway: be very careful about the size of your team. Hire only the key people you need to get by and nobody else. Use freelancers and interns for everything else. If you run out of cash before your concept takes off, you are dead in the water, so every dollar saved is very precious.

Phase 4: Prepare to Scale

Once you have your second round, you can take a breath and start to fill out the team properly while you prepare to scale. This doesn?t mean going nuts, but it means taking on a few more key people who can own areas of the business.

At M?O, we hired experts in each of the functional areas. Over the following months, we brought on a more experienced chief marketing officer, a chief operating officer and an artistic director. These senior hires were expensive for an early stage company, but we knew we needed to grow quickly and could not do it without this level of talent. At the same time, we began to hire across the organisation to support the various functional areas. We also moved offices.

Phase 5: Getting Big

As the business takes off, it will hopefully start generating meaningful numbers. You may want to raise another round. This is when you can really grow your team out.

Today, in our new office, with?our latest round closed?and most of our senior executives in place, M?O?s recruitment efforts have primarily be focused on broadening the team across various functional areas. We are now over 70 employees. A middle management layer has taken shape. In some cases, some of the early employees have stepped up and taken on the bigger roles within a larger business. In other cases, people were unable to keep pace with the growth of the business and have been replaced with new hires. Dealing with this is always a difficult part of being a good?CEO, but sometimes good people no longer fit their roles.

Our current senior management team is my bedrock. As M?O has grown and taken on momentum of its own, I need to spend more and more time with customers, partners and investors. This means I don?t have as much time to address smaller issues that I used to welcome tackling directly, which makes it critical to have strong senior managers in place, reporting back to me only on critical concerns and updates. They batten down the hatches, while I steer the ship into the growth storm I see on the horizon.

Advantages E Commerce Offers You | Space Commerce Business

A few of the benefits of e-commerce offers over traditional commerce would be the reasons why online shopping has turn out to be very popular. If e-commerce appears to be complex for you, don?t get worried. It really is not a tough idea whatsoever. E-commerceis just the trade of products along with services via electronic transfer of data. Many conventional stores now have their own online presence which makes up about a large proportion of their product sales. Actually small nearby Mom & Pop stores usually have on-line shops that enable them to market electronically, as well as bring localized business to their stores. More and more people search on the internet and evaluate stores prior to they really visit a shop to buy a product, this means not really having an Online presence will not make any sense in the current marketplace.?

(AP) ? Russell Means spent a lifetime as a modern American Indian warrior. He railed against broken treaties, fought for the return of stolen land and even took up arms against the federal government.

A onetime leader of the American Indian Movement, he called national attention to the plight of impoverished tribes and often lamented the waning of Indian culture. After leaving the movement in the 1980s, the handsome, braided activist was still a cultural presence, appearing in several movies.

Means, who died Monday from throat cancer at age 72, helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee ? a bloody confrontation that raised America's awareness about the struggles of Indians and gave rise to a wider protest movement that lasted for the rest of the decade.

Before AIM, there were few national advocates for American Indians. Means was one of the first to emerge. He sought to restore Indians' pride in their culture and to challenge a government that had paid little attention to tribes in generations. He was also one of the first to urge sports teams to do away with Indian names and mascots.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said, recalling the early days of the movement. And there were dozens, if not hundreds, of athletic teams "that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to demand that the government honor its treaties with American Indian tribes. The movement eventually faded away, Means said, as Native Americans became more self-aware and self-determined.

There were plenty of American Indian activists before AIM, but it became the "radical media gorilla," said Paul DeMain, editor of News from Indian Country, a national newspaper focused on tribal affairs.

"If someone needed help, you called on the American Indian Movement, and they showed up and caused all kind of ruckus and looked beautiful on a 20-second clip on TV that night," DeMain said.

Means and AIM co-founder Dennis Banks were charged in 1974 for their role in the Wounded Knee uprising in which hundreds of protesters occupied the town on the site of the 1890 Indian massacre. Protesters and federal authorities were locked in a standoff for 71 days and frequently exchanged gunfire. Before it was over, two tribal members were killed and a federal agent seriously wounded.

After a trial that lasted several months, a judge threw out the charges on grounds of government misconduct.

Other protests led by Means included an American Indian prayer vigil on top of Mount Rushmore and the seizure of a replica of the Mayflower on Thanksgiving Day in Plymouth, Mass.

But Means' constant quest for the spotlight raised doubts about his motives. Critics who included many fellow tribe members said his main interest was building his own notoriety.

Means said his most important accomplishment was the proposal for the Republic of Lakotah, a plan to carve out a sovereign Indian nation inside the United States. He took the idea all the way to the United Nations, even though it was ignored by tribal governments closer to home, including his own Oglala Sioux leaders, with whom he often clashed.

For decades, Means was dogged by questions about whether the group promoted violence, especially the 1975 slaying of a woman in the tribe and the gun battles with federal agents at Wounded Knee.

Authorities believe three AIM members shot and killed Annie Mae Aquash on the Pine Ridge reservation on the orders of someone in AIM's leadership because they suspected she was an FBI informant.

Two activists ? Arlo Looking Cloud and John Graham ? were both eventually convicted of murder. The third has never been charged.

Also in 1975, murder charges were filed against Means and Dick Marshall, an AIM member, in the shooting death of a Sioux man at a saloon in the town of Scenic, S.D. Marshall served 24 years in prison. Means was acquitted.

His activism extended to tribes beyond the United States. In the mid-1980s, Means traveled to Nicaragua to support indigenous Miskito Indians who were fighting the Sandinista government.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Means grew up in the San Francisco area and battled drugs and alcohol as a young man before becoming an early leader of AIM.

With his rugged good looks and long, dark braids, he also was known for a handful of Hollywood roles, most notably in the 1992 movie "The Last of the Mohicans," in which he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye.

He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Means also ran unsuccessfully for the Libertarian nomination for president in 1988 and briefly served as a vice presidential candidate in 1984 on the ticket of Hustler publisher Larry Flynt.

Means always considered himself a Libertarian and couldn't believe that anyone would want to call themselves a Republican or a Democrat.

"It's just unconscionable that America has become so stupid," he said.

Means often refused interviews and verbally blasted journalists who showed up to cover his public appearances. Instead, he chose to speak to his fan base through YouTube videos and blog posts on his website.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in the autobiography, admitting to his frailties but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Means died at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D. He announced in August 2011 that he had inoperable throat cancer and told The Associated Press that he would forego mainstream medicine in favor of traditional American Indian remedies.

Means' death came a day after former Sen. George McGovern died in Sioux Falls at the age of 90. McGovern had traveled to Wounded Knee with then-Sen. James Abourezk during the takeover to try to negotiate an end to hostilities.

"I've lost two good friends in a matter of two to three days," Abourezk said Monday. "I don't pretend to understand it."

Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said wake services for Means' will be Wednesday on Pine Ridge, and his ashes will be scattered in the Black Hills on Thursday.

short answer Sunday ? 7 short answers to 7 short ... - Ask a Manager

It?s short answer Sunday ? seven short answers to seven short questions. Here we go?

1. Photos on your LinkedIn profile

I know that photos in general should not be sent with resumes, etc., but from what I hear you are encouraged to post a picture of yourself on your Linked In page. I don?t think it?s a good idea, for all the same reasons you do not send it out with your resume or include it with online materials. Do you have an opinion or thoughts about this?

It?s fine to post a photo on LinkedIn (assuming it?s professional, doesn?t include your children, etc.). LinkedIn is different; it?s for networking and building relationships, and many people use photos to help people put a face with a name. That?s different from your resume, where the point is to explain your qualifications for a job, since what you look like isn?t part of your qualifications.

[And I know you could argue that employers might want to put a face with the name too, but (a) rightly or wrongly, photos with resumes are considered cheesy in the U.S., and (b) employers really don't want to be accused of putting a race with the name, so are uncomfortable when applicants send photos.]

2. Can you have too many LinkedIn recommendations written at once?

Due to a corporate merger/company reconstruction, my position, along with over 150 others, were eliminated. In order to help me in my job hunt, I reached out to several people in my network via LinkedIn, requesting LinkedIn recommendations. While I was expecting a handful to respond, I?ve received an overwhelming response. I am extremely grateful that this many people are willing to vouch for my work, but am worried that it will it look suspicious to have so many (7 and counting) recommendations all written within days of each other.

In LinkedIn recommendations, does quality trump date and quantity? Should I approve all of these to be displayed on my profile?

Yeah, some people will notice that they were all written at the same time and will assume that they were the result of a push by you. How much this matters, I can?t really say. The fact is that LinkedIn recommendations don?t count for all that much ? they were written for you to see, so employers know that they don?t necessarily tell the whole story.

3. Should I reapply?

Last week, I had an interview and didn?t get the job. However, I passed the personality and computer literacy test. I can reapply in 6 months. Is it worth reapplying or will I be denied another interview?

There?s no way to know, but what do you have to lose by reapplying?

4. Explaining a layoff in a cover letter or resume

I am a job seeker, having been retrenched. Your advice on how to graciously address the fact that I am not working, and why, would be much appreciated.

I prefer to get it out the way and mention it in my cover letter, or resume where there is not an opportunity to provide a cover letter, e.g. an online application. The real question is, how do I word it so that it does not reflect poorly on me? I have been advised, off the record, by HR at my former employer to say that my job was lost due to off-shoring of posts, and then to talk around it in the interview. While it is true that my former employer has a strategy of off-shoring, my job was lost because of poor business and the need to cut costs. I think that the advice was actually aimed at protecting my former employer?s reputation in the marketplace rather than to assist me! So, how do you advise I address this issue with prospective employers?

Whether your job was lost due to offshoring or due to the need to cut costs isn?t going to be all that relevant to prospective employers; your answer to them only needs to be that your job was eliminated in layoffs. Employers want to know whether you left voluntarily (and if so, why), or whether you were fired (and if so, why), or whether you were laid off. You were laid off, and you don?t need to get into details.

You really don?t need to get into this in your cover letter though, and definitely not on your resume. This is something for the interview, if you?re asked ? not for your application materials, which are intended to demonstrate why you?re right for this particular job.

5. Will I qualify for unemployment if I?m fired for saying I plan to resign?

I?ve been with my company for about 10 years, and while I originally very much enjoyed working there, I?m now at the point where I?m unhappy there and need to move on. Because I put in so much time with the company and don?t like the idea of sneaking around interviewing, I want to let them know that it is time for me to begin the job search, or at least just tell them that I?m unhappy about my current responsibilities and if there is no change, I will be looking elsewhere. While I don?t believe they will ask me to leave upon hearing this, I do want to make sure I?m prepared just in case.

If they do terminate me because I expressed my intent of leaving, even if I haven?t officially resigned or advised them if a time frame, would I qualify for unemployment at all? I?m in NY, if this makes any difference.

I can?t speak to New York specifically, but in general, in most states, you would qualify for unemployment. In fact, even if you give a specific date of resignation ? say, December 1 ? and they told you to leave now, in most states you?d be eligible for unemployment between now and December 1.

However, I strongly encourage you to base your decision on whether or not to give them a heads-up on how you?ve seen them handle other people who have given generous notice periods. Have people been pushed out earlier than they would have otherwise planned to leave? If so, they?ve given up any entitlement to a long notice period from other people. But if they have a track record of accommodating long notice periods, has been grateful to employees who provide long notice, and has generally shown that employees can feel safe being candid about their plans to leave, then you should feel safe in proceeding with your plan.

6. Name-dropping in cover letters

I have a cover letter question. Is it appropriate to drop a family member?s name in your cover letter, ever? Or would it just come off as unprofessional or insincere? My case is my grandfather worked for a certain small sector of the government for over thirty years, and I am applying for a position there now. I would like to mention him because his career is inspiring to me and one of the reasons I am very interested in this field of work. I am not assuming they will recognize his name as he passed away many years ago, but who knows. I thought since this is a unique connection it might be worth noting. Would it sound better to leave his name out but still mention my grandfather worked as a [title], or leave out the connection out all together? My main concern is I will come across as presuming I will get the job because I have a connection.

And on a similar note, how do you feel about mentioning living family or friends who are currently working in the field you are applying to (assuming they are influential and well-known in this field)? Cheesy or helpful?

I?m not a big fan of name-dropping unless it?s something like ?Jane Smith suggested I apply,? and Jane Smith is someone who the person reading your cover letter knows. Otherwise it sounds like name-dropping for name-dropping?s sake. The better way to utilize contacts who are working in the field you?re applying in is to have those people reach out to their contacts on your behalf to recommend you.

With your grandfather, I could potentially see saying something like, ?My grandfather, Bill Smith, worked for XYZ Agency more than 30 years, and my talks with him about A and B are what originally interested me in the field.? But even then, you risk your reader wondering if you?re mentioning him because you think it?ll get you preferential treatment, so I could argue this either way.

7. Correcting a cover letter mistake

I am a recent graduate and I have been diligently working on job applications. Last month, I applied to a position at the global research department at HSBC?s investment bank. It was a long shot, but I later completed a first round phone interview and was told my application will be more thoroughly screened before deciding whether to invite me to a final round interview at their head offices.

Great, I thought. I checked my application again and then realized an embarrassing mistake this weekend. On one question on the application form, it was asked what interests me in applying for my chosen business area. So I spent a long time explaining what fascinates me about research. But at the last sentence I wrote ?what attracts me to the fast-paced world of trading.? I had not applied to any roles of trading anywhere.

I know that since I?ve already gone this far, this small thing could undo my entire application. What do you recommend to salvage my mistake without drawing attention to it? I know this role is detail oriented, so I want to spin my message into pointing out how picky I was to point out a small mistake which is greater than a typo. Should I call the HR? Should I email the manager of the department? Or should I do nothing and accept whatever happens?

Do not call HR. The last thing they want is to be bothered with a phone call about this type of mistake. If you do anything, send a short follow-up email correcting it. It may or may not help, since generally they?re looking for candidates who will find the mistake before the material gets sent out, not after, but there?s no harm in trying. Be aware that they?re going to assume you were copying and pasting from another cover letter that really was about trading.

Life in Uruguay: legal abortion and pot dealing

FILE - In this Oct. 25, 2009, file photo Uruguay's President Jose Mujica, 74, stands in a tractor on his flower farm on the outskirts of Montevideo, Uruguay, Sunday. Uruguayans used to call their country the Switzerland of Latin America, but its faded grey capital seems a bit more like Amsterdam now that its congress legalized abortion on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2012, and is drawing up plans to sell government-grown marijuana. (AP Photo/Matilde Campodonico, file)

(AP) ? Uruguayans used to call their country the Switzerland of Latin America, but its faded grey capital seems a bit more like Amsterdam now that its congress has legalized abortion and is drawing up plans to sell government-grown marijuana.

Both measures would be unthinkable in many other countries. Cuba is the only other nation in the region that makes first-trimester abortions accessible to all women, and no country in the world produces and sells pot for drug users to enjoy.

But President Jose "Pepe" Mujica, a flower-farming former leftist guerrilla, vowed to sign whatever bill congress could settle on that can minimize the 30,000 illegal abortions his government says Uruguayan women suffer annually.

And while lawmakers have yet to debate pot sales, Mujica's ruling Broad Front coalition staked its ground in August by openly declaring that the drug war has failed. Smoking pot ? if not growing and selling it ? is already legal in Uruguay, and supplying the weed is a $30 million business, the government said.

This is democracy "a la Uruguaya" ? the Uruguayan way ? a phrase that reflects both the pride and the unmet promises of a society where finding common ground is a highly shared value, in stark contrast to many other countries where voters are divided by us-and-them politics.

Such outsized respect for the democratic process has enabled the country of 3.4 million people wedged between Argentina and Brazil to reach consensus on many issues that have stymied bigger and richer nations, from reforming health care to providing free university educations, to setting ambitious renewable energy goals. By embracing compromises, Uruguay has managed to hold onto its middle class through repeated economic crises, and pass laws that have consistently improved its citizens' quality of life.

But Uruguayans are increasingly concluding that Mujica has been too conciliatory ? too aloof ? and what they need now is more hands-on management. They love his crotchedy homespun humor and his man-of-the-people image, but they say Uruguay could benefit from a bit more decisiveness, historian Gerardo Caetano said.

Mujica, who entered politics after spending 14 years in prison during Uruguay's dictatorship, is an unusual leader by any standard.

He gives away 90 percent of his salary, doesn't have a bank account, drives a 41-year-old Volkswagen and never wears a tie. Now 77 and nearing the end of his five-year term, he has been talking a lot lately about stepping back and finding the joy in simple things, reflecting a personal style that goes to extremes of austerity.

"Mujica is a very strange, singular figure and yet he expresses this singular desire that Uruguayans in general have," Caetano said during an interview in his Montevideo apartment, where thousands of books spilled off the shelves. "Uruguayans like having unusual politicians, but they don't like authoritarians. They don't want leaders who are remote or confrontational."

"In Argentina, government is whatever the president says it is. Here, no president defines his performance without negotiation, and especially not Mujica. He really doesn't like to give orders. He doesn't want to be the chief," Caetano said. "In Uruguay, imposing things just doesn't work."

Creating a police state to take on drug traffickers would be anathema to Uruguayans, who have long been among the most secular, socially liberal and highly educated people in Latin America. Instead, the government hopes to drive traffickers out of business by providing a better service to drug users.

And in another reflection of Uruguay's national character, both the abortion and marijuana initiatives are intended to exclude foreigners. Only Uruguayans will benefit from these moves.

Still, many Uruguayans aren't exactly happy about either measure.

The activists who won the abortion battle last week applauded just briefly and then left the senate gallery complaining about the concessions they made.

"This is a solution very much 'a la Uruguaya,'" said Romina Napilote, a 27-year-old sociologist with the Pro-Derechos group who worries that the 10 pages of fine print added to win over a few reluctant lawmakers will end up forcing more women into risky clandestine abortions.

"We are very conciliating, always addressing what the conservatives want and trying for the middle ground," she said. "It's an issue in our political culture ... Living in a society with so much tolerance for the opinions of others also holds us back."

For filmmaker Pablo Stoll, whose movies have captured the essence of everyday life in Montevideo, "the Uruguayan way" satisfies no one.

"It means getting halfway there and not taking responsibility for the other 50 percent," he said while sipping coffee in La Florida, a corner bar full of stalwarts from the local communist party chapter.

"I grew up with the conviction that there would be utopias, and we haven't gotten there yet," he said, dismissing both the marijuana and abortion measures as likely to fail or be overturned. "At some point you have to take a stand ? you can't always be with one foot on each side of the line."

That feeling is reflected in Mujica's polling numbers. He enjoyed 66 percent popularity ratings when he was elected with 51 percent of the vote in 2009, but his numbers have plunged, to 43 percent last month. And when asked about his performance, Uruguayans are even more critical: only 36 percent approve, compared to 42 percent disapprove. The CIFRA tracking poll of 802 voters had an error margin of 3.4 percent.

But Mujica is very much a product of his society, one where a series of reforms in the early 1900s established Montevideo as a socially liberal bastion in a region where the Roman Catholic Church still has huge influence. The reforms separated Church and State, removed religion from public schools and legalized divorce long before other countries did.

They were so committed to the idea of the collective good that they banned colorful paint on the facades of buildings, all of which had to remain the same color as their original materials. This is why so many of Montevideo's concrete buildings remain grey even today, Caetano said.

"No one more than anyone else" was a common lecture to immigrants arriving in the port of Montevideo in those days, reflecting a disdain for people who tried to stand above or apart from the rest.

"Mujica loves this phrase ? he repeats it all the time," Caetano said. "It means the rich are less rich and the poor are less poor. It also means avoiding conflicts, trying to soften clashes with your opponents and looking to make deals instead."

He bought the sky-blue Beetle, his only declared asset, before becoming president in 2010, replacing a Vespa scooter that he and his wife, Sen. Lucia Topolansky, used to ride together to Congress from their farm in the working-class "Rincon del Cerro," or "corner of the hill" neighborhood in Montevideo's gritty outskirts.

"They say I'm the world's poorest president. Let me tell you that I'm not poor! Poor are those who need too much," he said Thursday while getting an honorary degree at Argentina's Universidad de La Plata, the day after the final abortion vote.

"I discovered the keys to this in the jail cells, when I couldn't read. If I hadn't spent those years there, I wouldn't be who I am, because one learns more from pain than from bounty," he said. "That's why, the night when I had a mattress, I felt happy. How is it possible, therefore, that we spend our lives poisoned with desperation to buy a new car every two years? If I could, I would live much more simply."

007 Skyfall screening Oct. 29 to benefit Arcadia charities ...

You are here: Home / Featured / 007 screening to benefit Arcadia

James Bond is celebrating his 50th Anniversary in Arcadia with a special advance fundraiser screening of the newest 007 film ?Skyfall? ?on Oct. 29, well before most of the rest of the world sees it, and nearly two weeks before it officially opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 9.

With James Bond having a connection to Arcadia, Santa Anita Park, and Breeders? Cup (see below), proceeds will benefit racing charities and be used as seed money for a potential 2013 return of the Arcadia?s Best Patriotic Festival and parade.

The first Bond movie presented in the giant-screen IMAX format will be shown at 5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the AMC Santa Anita 16 IMAX theater in the Westfield Santa Anita mall, which seats nearly 300 people. Doors open at 4:30 p.m.
MGM, under studio chairman and Santa Anita horse race fan Gary Barber, and Santa Anita Park CEO Mark Verge are partnering on the pre-Breeders? Cup World Championships fundraiser event from which all proceeds will be donated to three charities: CARMA (California Retirement Management Account for retired race horses), the PDJF (Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund), and Arcadia?s Best Foundation.
The latter is the non-profit community events arm of this web site that produced One Community, One Book events the past two years and last year?s Arcadia?s Best Patriotic Festival that attracted 4,000 people to watch more than 70 local parade entries on First Avenue in Downtown Arcadia.

In response to popular demand, organizers hope to raise enough money to produce the Festival and parade again next summer. Donations from this ?Skyfall? screening ? split with the other two horse racing charities ? will be put towards raising the $35,000 needed for the Festival and parade. Otherwise, the money will be put into producing the next One Community, One Book program.

Tickets are priced at $100 each and are available on Santa Anita?s website, www.SantaAnita.com.

?Skyfall,? the 23rd film in the longest-running and most successful film series of time, stars Daniel Craig in his third outing as the British secret agent even though this is the first new Bond movie in four years. Adele?s theme song for the movie was just released this month (music video at bottom).

Arcadia, Santa Anita, and the Breeders? Cup have a special connection to 007:

The man who brought the 1950s James Bond novels by Ian Fleming to the big screen with ?Dr. No? in October 1962 was Albert R. ?Cubby? Broccoli (yes, of the Italian family responsible for creating the vegetable of the same name by crossing a cauliflower with rabe).
About the time he was becoming a movie producer, Broccoli also acquired a taste for thoroughbred race horses after being introduced to the sport by friend Alfred G. Vanderbilt.

After more than a quarter-century of 007 movies and in the midst of the longest unplanned six-year gap in the series in the early 1990s, Broccoli became owner of a horse that he called Brocco.

At the same time, Cubby was grooming his daughter Barbara Broccoli and stepson Michael G. Wilson to take over his role as primary producer and overseer of the franchise. His last official act with the 007 films was to cast Pierce Brosnan as the new James Bond. At the time, Brosnan was the star of the popular TV series ?Remington Steele,? which filmed parts of at least one episode in Arcadia, across the street from the Santa Anita race track at the Los Angeles County Arboretum.

Meanwhile, Broccoli was riding Brocco to global fame in a different arena.

Under Hall of Fame Santa Anita jockey Gary Stevens, Brocco won the $1 million Breeders? Cup Juvenile race in one of the rare years it was held at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia on Nov. 6, 1993. The second favorite at 3-1 won by five lengths, making him the ?new darling of the ?94 Derby,? according to Sports Illustrated.

Five months later, Brocco won the $500,000 Santa Anita Derby Handicap on April 10, 1994, for the 85-year-old Broccoli. Again under Stevens, the three-year-old Brocco came from nearly 10 lengths off the pace and gradually caught and passed Tabasco Cat for a three-quarter-length victory, stamping Brocco as the ?Best of the West? heading into the Triple Crown classics.

Broccoli, wearing running shoes, a bright red sweater under a tweed coat, and using a cane, was accompanied by his wife, Dana. He likened the Santa Anita Derby victory in Arcadia to the opening night crowd for his first Bond movie in 1962 at the London Palladium, ?Dr. No.? He said Brocco ? which won four of his eight races and placed second twice ? was the best horse he ever owned.

A year later ?Goldeneye? completed Cubby?s final stamp on the 007 series by resurrecting the James Bond franchise in 1995.
Broccoli died the following year in 1996.

It?s fitting on the 50th anniversary of Broccoli?s film franchise to present one of the first screenings of ?Skyfall? during Breeders? Cup week just a few hundred yards from the site of the most memorable victories of Broccoli and his horse Brocco at Santa Anita Park race track.
