Mourinho won't punish Pepe for Messi hand stamp

Lionel Messi

updated 10:18 a.m. ET Jan. 21, 2012

MADRID - Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho will not punish Pepe for stomping on the hand of Barcelona's Lionel Messi, saying that the defender's apology was sufficient.

The Portuguese manager said Saturday "the player has spoken and that is enough" after including Pepe in his squad for Sunday's home game against Athletic Bilbao.

Real Madrid lost 2-1 Wednesday to Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey quarterfinal. Mourinho said after the game if Pepe had stepped on Messi's hand intentionally it would be "punishable."

The following day Pepe issued a statement on Madrid's website saying the stomp was "unintentional."

America's 'worrisome' ADHD drug shortage (The Week)

New York ? Each day, hundreds of parents complain to the FDA that they can't track down Adderall and Ritalin to fill their kids' prescriptions. What gives?

Millions of Americans rely on drugs like Adderall and Ritalin to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). But it's reportedly getting hard for many patients to find pharmacies with enough pills in stock to fill their prescriptions. That could mean inattentiveness and disruptive behavior from children at school, and adults struggling to concentrate at work. What's behind the "worrisome" drug shortage? Here's what you should know:

How bad is the shortage?
Demand for Adderall is reaching "all-time highs,"?says Toni Clarke at?Reuters. In 2010, more than 18 million Adderall prescriptions were written, a 13.4 percent increase from 2009. And the supply can't keep pace with that demand. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) receives hundreds of complaints each day from parents unable to find the drugs for their kids, and has added these medications to its "official shortages list."

SEE ALSO: Can strep throat cause OCD?

?

What's behind the shortage?
Many are blaming the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA),?says Gardiner Harris at?The New York Times, which sets strict quotas to curb abuse. (College students, for instance, are known to illegally take the drugs as study aids.) In a "rare open disagreement," the FDA has swatted at the DEA, blaming the latter for the shortage. For its part, the DEA blames drug manufacturers, who are electing to make more expensive brand-name pills and fewer generics, thus "creating supply and demand imbalances," Harris says.?Indeed, "shortages, particularly of cheaper generics, have become so endemic that some people say they worry almost constantly about availability."

How can patients cope?
Not easily. High-priced drugs are more readily available, but many Americans can't afford them. Sometimes, the price difference is hundreds of dollars. And manufacturers have been known to distribute "too much product in one place,"?says JoNel Aleccia at MSNBC, which?means long trips for those looking to fill their prescriptions. "For people with ADHD, there's already a stigma attached to it," one patient tells MSNBC. "You end up feeling like you're drug-seeking. It doesn?t make you feel good."

Law & Order Legacies is more like interactive TV than adventure gaming (Appolicious)

Law & Order Legacies, a new point-and-click iOS adventure title by Telltale Games, has me in a quandary. The 20-year fan in me wants to unabashedly endorse, even love, this opportunity to enter the action with a mash-up ?all-star? cast from the original TV classic and SVU. But, as a game, especially one with major money and a top tier development team behind it, it disappoints.

Like other Telltale offerings Legacies is episodic. The first case is $2.99, and the second episode is available as an in-app purchase for the same price. Several additional ?shows? are scheduled for IAP release soon.

One issue ? if the first slice is any indication ? is value: The adventure lasts about an hour. Puzzle Agent 2 HD, my favorite Telltale sequel, costs as much, but kept me playing for 15 hours solid.

I also dislike the art style, with intense unnatural shadowing and a manner not quite cartoonish, but a far cry from authentic. The character renderings are generally poor. Ray Curtis and Abby Carmichael look like themselves, but Olivia Benson, already drop-dead gorgeous, is overly sexualized, Capt. Van Buren doesn?t vaguely resemble any of her on-screen transformations, and Jack McCoy?s nose is so, um, prodigious, I didn?t recognize him. While not the original actors, the voice acting is solid, evoking some of the essence of the fan favorites.

The real issue is gameplay. This is a point-and-click adventure, with no room for creative problem-solving. The action is linear, which in understandable, but unimaginative in execution. During police interviews, questions pop up, and a tap selects the topic. The answers contain important information for future investigation, so they are logged. In the first half, playing as cops, the game is about determining whether a potential suspect is lying and how we know ? a multiple-choice affair. One easy seek-and-find breaks up the copious dialogue. Getting the answer wrong too often restarts the scene, but nothing is lost. You can progress by simple elimination.

In the courtroom, things are more interesting. Players have to object and for the right reason, manipulate jury sympathies, even plea bargain. But, the same multiple-choice interface plagues the lawyering, too. It?s more like reading a Choose Your Own Adventure book than adventure gaming. Law & Order Legacies succeeds in recreating the tone of the show, but fails to make the full leap from semi-passive watching to immersive gaming participation.

BYU basketball notes: San Diego coach expected Cougars? bounce-back

Provo ? San Diego coach Bill Grier expected a big effort from BYU on Saturday.

He got it.

Two nights after the Cougars suffered an 18-point loss at Saint Mary?s, BYU rolled to an 88-52 win over the Toreros.

Grier talked about the Cougars? loss to Saint Mary?s with coach Dave Rose before San Diego?s game against BYU.

?I know Dave was disappointed in the way they played against Saint Mary?s,? Grier said, ?and I thought they corrected that in a hurry against us.?

Mostly, BYU?s defense was better.

San Diego shot 5-for-27 from the 3-point line and only 23 percent in the game.

?We just wanted to make sure our effort defensively was different,? said BYU post player Brandon Davies. ?We got put on our heels against Saint Mary?s, so we wanted to make sure we were the aggressor this game.?

Story continues below

Double-edged sword?

BYU played its first-ever West Coast Conference home game against San Diego.

According to Grier, the addition of BYU helps the league, even though coaches might not enjoy playing the Cougars.

?I?m not excited about having to come to the Marriott Center,? he said. ?But I do believe it?s really good for our conference ? the profile. Obviously this program has been very, very good.?

Grier praised the job Rose has done in creating ?a national level program that does nothing but help our conference.

?It doesn?t mean I?m excited to play them or I?m real happy about it, but I do think it?s good for our league.?

Kevin Price commentary on Auburn football: Barrett Trotter steps up after Clint Moseley goes down as Tigers beat Virginia Cavaliers in Chick-fil-A Bowl

ATLANTA -- Barrett Trotter took the snap, slid to his left, waiting for Emory Blake to run a deep crossing pattern. Trotter led him perfectly for a 50-yard gain.

The poise Trotter showed as he calmly moved to his left, the patience he exhibited as he waited for Blake to clear cornerback Demetrious Nicholson and the arm strength on the pass was impressive.

It also showed a quarterback playing with plenty of confidence.

Three plays later Auburn scored a touchdown, taking the lead for good in a 43-24 Chick-fil-A Bowl victory over Virginia at the Georgia Dome.

Trotter entered Saturday night?s game only after starter Clint Moseley suffered a right ankle injury and could not return.

The last time we saw Trotter on the playing field prior to Saturday night was the end of a dismal first half of play against Florida.

Despite the fact the Tigers went into intermission of that game with the lead, the Auburn coaches were disappointed enough in Trotter?s play that he was benched in favor of Moseley.

Trotter had started each of the first seven games and the Tigers went 5-2 in those games. He had solid games to open the season against Utah State and Mississippi State.

But then his stats and his confidence started to do a nosedive.

By the Florida game, Trotter looked confused and unsure of himself and the Auburn offense.

Since that game Trotter has been listed as second on the depth chart, but it was Kiehl Frazier who was the only other quarterback beside Moseley to take a snap.

It appeared Trotter was done as far as the Auburn coaches were concerned. It was not like Moseley played well in his five starts.

The Tigers went 2-3 in those games and were absolutely overmatched in losses to LSU, Georgia and Alabama.

Auburn coach Gene Chizik said earlier this month that he had talked with Trotter, who has another year of eligibility, about his future but declined to go into details.

Until Chizik hires a replacement for departing offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, there is no way of knowing if Trotter fits into the next Auburn offensive system.

The Trotter on display Saturday night would likely fare well in more of a pro-style offense, but Chizik hasn?t tipped his hand at all on what kind of a coach and offense he wants in 2012.

And while Trotter?s numbers were not that impressive Saturday night-- 11-of-18 for 175 yards and a touchdown -- his demeanor was. At no time did Trotter appear confused or rattled. He looked like a completely different player than the one who was eventually benched in the Florida game.

Of course, as good as Trotter looked, one has to wonder how much of it had to do with the opponent. Virginia?s defense would never be confused with the best of the SEC.

Porsche Design theme ported to BlackBerry 9900 / 9930, saves you a small fortune

If you want some of that Porsche Design look, without the German engineered price, then check what just pulled up on the driveway: a port of the custom theme and icons. Sadly, only BlackBerry 9900 / 9300 owners -- which share much of the same hardware as the P'9981 -- running BlackBerry OS7 (not 7.1) can give their handset that new car smell. This means the sharp lines and luxurious brushed finish that made the P'9981 catch our eye in the first place will remain firmly in those pockets deep enough to afford it. Tap the source link if you still want to add the racing stripes to your current saloon.

North Korea's new leaders lash out at South Korea and allies (Reuters)

SEOUL (Reuters) ? North Korea sounded a bellicose note in its first communication with the outside world since the death of leader Kim Jong-il, saying its confrontational stance against South Korea would not change and labeling its opponents "foolish."

Since Kim Jong-il died on December 17, the outside world has been watching to see whether his son Kim Jong-un, aged in his 20s, would stick to its hardline "military first" policies that have seen the isolated nation move closer to nuclear weapons capacity.

"On this occasion, we solemnly declare with confidence that foolish politicians around the world, including the puppet forces in South Korea, should not expect any changes from us," a broadcaster on state television said on Friday.

She was reading a statement from the National Defense Commission, the top body in the militarized and impoverished state under Kim Jong-il.

In a break from the black mourning clothing worn since Kim Jong-il's death, the broadcaster wore dark red clothes and almost shouted her defiant message.

North Korea has a long history of using bellicose phrases against the South, especially since the conservative government of Lee Myung-bak took office in 2008 and ended a policy of engagement with the North.

It has threatened to turn the South's capital Seoul into a "sea of fire" on numerous occasions and repeated that rhetoric again on Friday.

"We will never engage with the Lee Myung-bak administration," said the announcer.

"The sea of bloody tears from our military and people will follow the puppet regime until the end. The tears will turn into a sea of revengeful fire that burns everything."

In 2010, the North launched an artillery barrage that killed South Korean civilians for the first time since the end of the Korean War in 1953. It was blamed for sinking a South Korean warship earlier that year, although it denies it did.

Little is known of Kim Jong-un, who had been groomed for government since 2009.

He has been dubbed "Supreme Commander" in North Korea and is expected to rule with the aid of key figures like his uncle Jang Song-thaek, at least in the early stages of the power transition.

"Expecting any change from the North on our part would be foolish," said Chung Young-tae, an analyst at the Korea Institute of National Unification in Seoul, a government think-tank.

South Korea's government did not formally respond to the comments from the North.

NUCLEAR CAPACITY

Under Kim Jong-il, who died earlier this month aged 69, North Korea conducted two nuclear tests and a top observer of its nuclear program said this week the country may only be a few years away from developing a nuclear tipped missile.

Few however expect the North to launch a full scale attack on South Korea. Pyongyang's main backer, China, has repeatedly urged a "peaceful" solution on the Korean peninsula.

Despite the freeze in official relations between North and South, the two sides held talks this year which North Korea leaked, embarrassing the government in Seoul.

North Korea needs food aid from the government in Seoul as up to a third of its population is malnourished, according to the United Nations.

"These forms of messages have led to conversation before," said Chung.

Elly May Clampett vs. Barbie? No verdict. Elly May settles suit.

Elly May Clampett Barbie doll caused actress Donna Douglas to sue CBS and Mattel. Ms. Douglas settles lawsuit over the use of her image as Elly MayClampett.

The actress who played tomboy Elly May Clampett on 1960s television show ``The Beverly Hillbillies'' has settled her lawsuit against Mattel over a Barbie doll based on her character.?Actress Donna Douglas, now 78, sued the toy company in May as well as the consumer products division of CBS Corp. seeking a minimum of $75,000 in damages.

Her complaint said Mattel was ``engaging in the unauthorized use'' of her name, likeness and image to promote and sell the ''Elly May'' Barbie.

Attorneys in the case filed court papers on Tuesday in Louisiana indicating the lawsuit had been settled. The financial terms were not revealed

Douglas starred in ``The Beverly Hillbillies'' which ran from 1962 to 1971 on CBS television. She played the beautiful but naive Elly May Clampett, in the show about a family that struck oil and ditched their backwoods home for life in California.

Philip Shaheen, an attorney for Douglas who now lives in Louisiana, said he could not comment on the details of the settlement. California-based Mattel could not be reached for comment.

CBS Consumer Products had argued in court papers that it had exclusive rights to use the Elly May character, and did not need Douglas' permission before entering into an agreement with Mattel for the doll.
