Doolittle Home is Very Pleased to Announce That Our Retirement Community has Earned a Perfect, Deficiency-Free Survey Result from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH)

FOXBORO, MA, December 30, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Doolittle Home, located in Foxboro, MA, is very pleased to announce that our Retirement Community has earned a perfect, deficiency-free survey from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). The deficiency -free rating is a result of the State's rigorous 3 day examination which ended on October 13th, 2011 and is one of the top indicators of excellence for long term care facilities.

They evaluated our facility for quality, safety, administration effectiveness, cleanliness, nursing care, activity programs, protection of resident rights, and food services. During the last three years, the department found only 17 out of 431 nursing facilities deficiency-free.

With increasingly stringent regulations, achieving the deficiency-free rating is exceedingly difficult. These surveys, and the subsequent ratings, are a useful tool for prospective and current residents; their families and health care practitioners, to make informed choices about the quality of a long term care facility.

It takes an entire team effort to achieve this distinguished rating. DeAnna Willis, Executive Director with the continuous efforts of the entire staff, including activities, maintenance, housekeeping, dietary, and our professional medical staff, collaborate daily to provide extraordinary care, which is the hallmark of the Doolittle Experience.

In addition, according to the 2009-2010 survey of 430 long-term care facilities released by the Massachusetts Department of Health, Doolittle Home received the following outstanding ratings. Doolittle Home ranked #1 in the latest state satisfaction survey as 1-Highest ranking for personal care 2-Top recognition for food service 3-Top ranking for physical facility 4- Second highest rating Administration & Staff.

Doolittle Home, recognized as a not for profit home, is licensed for 32 residents, by MA Department of Public Health to serve the elderly. Gingrich goes after rivals despite positive pledge (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? No more Mr. Nice Guy. Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich lambasted two of his top GOP rivals on Tuesday, despite his claim that he's sticking to a positive campaign.

Gingrich said he couldn't vote for Ron Paul if he were to become the GOP nominee and called the Texas congressman's views "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

In the same interview on CNN, Gingrich also offered a testy rebuke to Mitt Romney, saying that if Romney wants to run a negative campaign attacking Gingrich he should at least be "man enough to own it."

The sharp comments come as the former House speaker has seen his support slip in Iowa amid a barrage of attack ads that have cast him as an ethically challenged Washington insider.

Scrambling to regain momentum, Gingrich and a political action committee supporting him each took the wraps off television spots that will run statewide in Iowa.

The PAC Winning the Future is composed of former Gingrich staffers. The ad, its first, includes a broadside at Romney, although the former Massachusetts governor is never named.

"The Republican establishment wants to pick our candidate," the ad says. "When a principled conservative took the lead, they outspent Newt Gingrich 20 to 1, attacking him with falsehoods. ... Don't let the liberal Republican establishment pick our candidate."

Gingrich has said he will disavow any independent political action committee that spends money on negative ads. His own spot, funded by his campaign coffers, focuses on jobs and economic growth.

The former Georgia congressman launched a 22-stop "Jobs and Prosperity" bus tour, which kicked off Tuesday in Dubuque, in the northeast corner of Iowa. But he found himself on the defensive again on health care as a new memo surfaces that showed he had once praised the law enacted in Massachusetts when Romney was governor.

In an April 2006 memo from Gingrich's Atlanta-based Center for Health Transformation, he called it "the most exciting development of the past few weeks." He also said the law had "tremendous potential to effect major change in the American health system."

The memo also noted shortcomings in the Massachusetts law. Gingrich said the state's many regulations prohibited insurers from offering cheaper plans that would make coverage affordable. But he went on to note that that "we agree entirely with Gov. Romney and Massachusetts legislators that our goal should be 100 percent insurance coverage for all Americans."

Gingrich and others have argued that the Massachusetts law, widely seen as the model for President Barack Obama's national health overhaul, undercuts Romney's conservative credentials. Gingrich also has faced questions about his past support for an individual health care mandate, anathema to conservatives.

A Gingrich spokesman said Gingrich's comments are "old news that has been covered already."

"Newt previously supported a mandate for health insurance and changed his mind after seeing its effects," said the spokesman, R.C. Hammond. "The real question is why `Mitt the Massachusetts Moderate' won't admit that health insurance mandates don't work."

The Gingrich memo was first reported Tuesday by The Wall Street Journal.

Economists see growth picking up in new year

The U.S. economy will grow faster in 2012 ? if it isn't knocked off track by upheavals in Europe, according to an Associated Press survey of leading economists.

Unemployment will barely fall from the current 8.6 percent rate, though, by the time President Barack Obama runs for re-election in November, the economists say.

The three dozen private, corporate and academic economists expect the economy to grow 2.4 percent next year. In 2011, it likely grew less than 2 percent.

The year is ending on an upswing. The economy has generated at least 100,000 new jobs for five months in a row ? the longest such streak since 2006.

The number of people applying for unemployment benefits has dropped to the lowest level since April 2008. The trend suggests that layoffs have all but stopped and hiring could pick up.

And the economy avoided a setback when President Barack Obama signed legislation Friday extending a Social Security tax cut that was to expire at year's end. But Congress could agree only on a two-month extension.

The economists surveyed Dec. 14-20 expect the country to create 177,000 jobs a month through Election Day 2012. That would be up from an average 132,000 jobs a month so far in 2011.

Dean Maki, chief U.S. economist at Barclays Capital, says the U.S. economy remains vulnerable to an outside shock. A big threat is the risk that Europe's debt crisis will trigger a worldwide credit freeze like the one that hit Wall Street in late 2008.

A shock to the U.S. economy, he says, might not be as dangerous if it were growing at a healthier 4 percent to 5 percent annual pace. But when growth is stuck at 2 percent or 3 percent, a major global crisis could stall job creation and raise unemployment.

Beyond Europe, troubles in other areas could also upset the U.S. economy next year, the economists say. Congressional gridlock ahead of the 2012 elections and unforeseen global events, like this year's Arab Spring protests, could slow the U.S. economy. Three economists said rising nuclear tensions with Iran are a concern.

Even without an outside jolt, the economists expect barely enough job creation in 2012 to stay ahead of population growth and the return of discouraged workers into the labor force.

"I just don't know if it's going to be enough to bring the unemployment rate down," says Chad Moutray, chief economist for the National Association of Manufacturers.

The AP economists expect the unemployment rate to be stuck at a recession-level 8.4 percent when voters go to the polls in November. Unemployment was 8.6 percent in November.

A majority (56 percent) of the economists say the economy will get a lift from Federal Reserve policies. The Fed has said it plans to keep short-term interest rates near zero through at least mid-2013 if the economy remains weak. The central bank also has begun a campaign to try to push down mortgage rates and other long-term interest rates through next June.

Those surveyed also think the economy is strong enough to withstand higher oil prices. At near $100 a barrel, oil prices are up 10 percent from a year ago. But only two of the economists AP surveyed expect the higher prices to slow the economy "a lot."

The economists expect the European economy to shrink 0.5 percent in 2011 ? and fall into a recession. Europe is slowing as heavily indebted countries slash spending and banks exposed to government debt curtain lending.

Among the gravest fears is that a major country like Italy will default on its debt, wiping out some banks with large holdings of European government bonds. A worldwide credit crunch like the one that followed the 2008 failure of Lehman Bros could follow.

Story: Minister: Spain to fall back into recession

Twenty-one of the economists listed Europe as a threat to the U.S. economy next year.

"If it were a big enough downturn, given the size of Europe, it could bring the world economy down into recession," says Allen Sinai, president of Decision Economics.

But overall, the economists see only an 18 percent chance that Europe's debt troubles will cause a recession in the United States.

The economists are divided over which one step European policymakers should take now to bolster the 17-country eurozone.

More than one-fourth say the European Central Bank should aggressively try to lower the borrowing costs of the Italian and Spanish governments by buying their bonds.

Nearly one-fifth say European countries should jointly issue "Eurobonds" to help finance weaker countries.

And 17 percent say European governments should slash spending.

Still, the economists expect European policymakers to find a way to prevent the crisis from escalating into a global financial panic.

If Europe can stabilize its economies, the U.S. stock markets would rally sharply, economists say, and prospects for U.S. economic growth would brighten.

"Europe appears to be the only real impediment to keeping this recovery from happening," said Joel Naroff, president of Naroff Economics.

Thomas Sowell: Gingrich for president

posted at 10:04 pm on December 28, 2011 by Allahpundit

A grudging endorsement, but sufficiently esteemed that it deserves a little publicity.

The fact that each of the short-lived front-runners in the Republican field gained that position by presenting themselves as staunch conservatives suggests that Republican voters may have been trying to avoid having to accept Mitt Romney, whose record as governor of Massachusetts produced nothing that would be regarded as a serious conservative achievement.

Romney?s own talking point that he has been a successful businessman is no reason to put him into a political office, however much it may be a reason for him to become a successful businessman again?

Much depends on whether you think the voting public is going to be more interested in Newt Gingrich?s personal past than in the country?s future. Most of the things for which Gingrich has been criticized are things he did either in his personal life or when he was out of office. But, if we are serious, we are more concerned with his ability to perform when in office?

There are no guarantees, no matter whom the Republicans vote for in the primaries. Why not vote for the candidate who has shown the best track record of accomplishments, both in office and in the debates? That is Newt Gingrich. With all his shortcomings, his record shows that he knows how to get the job done in Washington.

According to RCP, Newt hasn?t cracked 20 percent (or even 18 percent) in any of the last five Iowa polls. That doesn?t mean he?s sunk ? he?s still the logical alternative for an undecided in the Not Romney and Not Paul camps ? but I?ll never understand why he let so many negative ads go unchallenged. He was famous for scorched-earth politics when he was in the House, yet when he finally got his second look as a presidential contender, he turned into a nice-ish guy. It?s probably too late now.

Here?s his new nice-guy ad. Exit quotation from former GOP Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, discussing her vote in 2003 on the Medicare prescription drug bill: ?Newt called me to vote yes.?

LIFE celebrates 75 years with new iPad app (Appolicious)

LIFE magazine is turning 75 this year, so the classic publication has released the hybrid coffee-table book/app Life 75 for iPad in celebration.

Life 75 features a collection of highlights from the publication?s 75-year history and includes two viewing methods, which means the app feels like two books in one. When holding your iPad vertically, you can swipe through various LIFE covers. These aren?t presented chronologically, but instead are slotted into various themes, such as war, children and celebrities.

When the iPad is tilted into landscape mode, Life 75 displays photos ?related? to the cover. This photo collection can be browsed by decade, and each photo includes caption information. There are also bonus features available, such as extra photos (small in size, but some never seen before), articles pulled from the publication or audio and video commentary from Life editors and contributors, both past and present.

I did find it strange that the photos are not necessarily from their corresponding covers. For instance, a 2007 image of Patrick Dempsey and his pregnant wife appears when you flip an issue from 1949 simply because it has a baby on the cover.

This app is by no means a complete LIFE anthology: It offers hundreds of photos and 135 covers from the past 75 years. It should also be noted that there are quite a few errors in typesetting, grammar and spelling throughout. That makes Life 75?s $13 price tag a hefty one, and worth a few thinks before you make this investment

Women's lung cancer risk not tied to childbirths

Women's lung cancer risk not tied to childbirths?

Jump to full article: Reuters, 2011-12-26
Author: Frederik Joelving

Intro:

A woman's lung cancer risk doesn't appear to be linked to the number of children she has, although some scientists had thought hormonal changes during pregnancy might protect against the disease.

That's according to a new report that sums up 16 previous studies on the topic, which researchers have explored to get a better understanding of lung cancer and possible treatments.

If lung cancer in women were tied to hormones the same way some breast cancers are, for instance, similar drugs might be effective against both diseases, said Jessica K. Paulus, who worked on the analysis.

So far, however, studies haven't agreed on whether or not pregnancies -- and by extension hormones -- play a role in lung cancer. . . .

The disease is rare in younger adults, but becomes more common as people grow old. Overall, the risk of getting lung cancer is about one in 13 for men and one in 16 for women. But these overall numbers include smokers, whose risk is many times higher than that of non-smokers.

"Both active smoking and exposure to second-hand smoking are some of the strongest risk factors for lung cancer," said Paulus. "Quitting smoking and quitting soon is associated with reducing your risk of lung cancer."

South Dakota State routs Washington 92-73

by Associated Press

KING5.com

Posted on December 18, 2011 at 9:19 PM

SEATTLE - Washington coaches tried to warn their players. They didn't get the message.

Nate Wolters scored 34 points as South Dakota State broke Washington's 32-game nonconference home winning streak with a 92-73 victory Sunday.

Washington's last nonconference home loss was to Valparaiso in the College Basketball Invitational on March 14, 2008. Its last regular-season nonconference home loss was Dec. 8, 2007, to Pittsburgh.

Washington coach Lorenzo Romar noticed a lack of energy at the team breakfast on Sunday. It persisted up to the noon PST start time, and then leaked into the game.

Romar also repeatedly warned his team of Wolters' ability, even using an anecdote about Steve Nash leading Santa Clara past UCLA when Romar was an assistant for the Bruins.

Washington did not take heed, and the result was a blistering start for South Dakota State.

"I don't care who we play, we don't lose like we did today at home," Romar said. "It's unacceptable. Unacceptable."

Wolters controlled the entire game. He played all 40 minutes and added seven assists and five rebounds to his 34 points. He did not commit a turnover.

"We knew if we shut him down we win, but obviously, as you can see, we didn't do that," Washington guard Tony Wroten said.

Romar took it a step further.

"I haven't seen a performance like that since Jason Kidd was in the Pac-10," Romar said, referring to the NBA star's days at Cal. "One of the best performances by a point guard I've ever seen at this level."

Griffan Callahan added 16 points and Chad White scored 12 for the Jackrabbits (10-4), who shot 55 percent from the field.

Wroten led Washington with 23 points. Darnell Gant added 15 and C.J. Wilcox scored 12 points for the Huskies (5-5).

Washington used a 15-8 run to open the second half, cutting South Dakota State's lead to 59-48 with 13:30 remaining.

But the Jackrabbits used numerous trips to the free-throw line to broaden the lead. Brayden Carlson made two free throws with 9:15 left to expand South Dakota State's lead to 70-52.

Wolters also helped steady things with three consecutive baskets. Washington never reduced the Jackrabbits' second-half lead to less than 11 points.

Callahan hit a 3-pointer for an early 5-2 South Dakota State lead, and Washington called a timeout just 1:03 into the game to discuss energy once again. But that was just the beginning for the Jackrabbits. They made their first seven 3-point attempts, led by as many as 21 in the half and went into the break ahead 51-33.

"Making shots like that can cut the heart out of anybody," South Dakota State coach Scott Nagy said.

In the first half, South Dakota State made 59 percent of its shots overall, and 73 percent from behind the arc.

"We were getting anything we wanted," Wolters said.

Wolters had 16 points before halftime while White, who was 4 for 5 from 3-point range in the half, had all 12 of his points. Wroten, with 10 points, was the only Washington player in double figures in the half, though he missed numerous defensive assignments.

Washington's game is Thursday against Cal State Northridge.

"If we're playing like this on Thursday, we need to go back to the drawing board and change a lot of things," Romar said.

Bring Out the Kwanzaa Kinara

I don't know where we got a candelabrum. But there we were, lighting the candles in the kinara and reciting Swahili words like umoja, ujima, and kujichagulia while my brother poured water from an earthenware jug onto a half-dead plant. We placed whatever fruit we had (apples, oranges, bruised bananas) onto a table festooned with African objets d'art, the kinara, and a small jug of water. For seven nights, we lit a candle and recited one of the Nguzo Saba principles, like nia for faith. The Swahili didn't roll off our tongues, but we liked how it sounded. We performed a libation, pouring liquid from the kikombe cha umoja, or unity cup, into soil in remembrance of our ancestors.

New Air Jordans cause nationwide shopping frenzy (AP)

SEATTLE ? Fights, vandalism and arrests marked the release of Nike's new Air Jordan basketball shoes as a shopping rush on stores across the country led to unrest that nearly turned into rioting.

The outbursts of chaos stretched from Washington state to Georgia as shoppers ? often waiting for hours in lines ? converged on stores Friday in pursuit of the shoes, a retro model of one of the most popular Air Jordans ever made.

In suburban Seattle, police used pepper spray on about 20 customers who started fighting at the Westfield Southcenter mall. The crowd started gathering at four stores in the mall around midnight and had grown to more than 1,000 people by 4 a.m., when the stores opened, Tukwila Officer Mike Murphy said. He said it started as fighting and pushing among people in line and escalated over the next hour.

Murphy said no injuries were reported, although some people suffered cuts or scrapes from fights. Shoppers also broke two doors, and 18-year-old man was arrested for assault after authorities say he punched an officer.

"He did not get his shoes; he went to jail," Murphy said.

The mayhem was reminiscent of the violence that broke out 20 years ago in many cities as the shoes became popular targets for thieves. It also had a decidedly Black Friday feel as huge crowds of shoppers overwhelmed stores for a must-have item.

In some areas, lines began forming several hours before businesses opened for the $180 shoes that were selling in a limited release.

As the crowds kept growing through the night, they became more unruly and ended in vandalism, violence and arrests.

A man was stabbed when a brawl broke out between several people waiting in line at a Jersey City, N.J., mall to buy the new shoes, authorities said. The 20-year-old man was expected to recover from his injuries.

In Richmond, Calif., police say crowds waiting to buy the Air Jordan 11 Retro Concords at the Hilltop Mall were turned away after a gunshot rang out around 7 a.m.

No injuries were reported, but police said a 24-year-old suspect was taken into custody. The gun apparently went off inadvertently, the Contra Costa Times reported.

Seventeen-year-old Dylan Pulver in Great Neck, N.Y., said he's been looking forward to the release of the shoes for several years, and he set out at 4:30 a.m. to get a pair. After the first store he tried was too crowded, he moved on to a second location and scored a pair.

"I probably could have used a half a size smaller, but I was just really happy to have the shoe," he said.

The frenzy over Air Jordans has been dangerous in the past. Some people were mugged or even killed for early versions of the shoe, created by Nike Inc. in 1984.

The Air Jordan has since been a consistent hit with sneaker fans, spawning a subculture of collectors willing to wait hours to buy the latest pair. Some collectors save the shoes for special occasions or never take them out of the box.

A new edition was launched each year, and release dates had to be moved to the weekends at some points to keep kids from skipping school to get a pair.

But the uproar over the shoe had died down in recent years. These latest incidents seem to be part of trend of increasing acts of violence at retailers this holiday shopping season, such as the shopper who pepper-sprayed others at a Wal-Mart in Los Angeles on Black Friday and crowds looting a clothing store in New York.

Nike issued a statement in response to the violence that said: "Consumer safety and security is of paramount importance. We encourage anyone wishing to purchase our product to do so in a respectful and safe manner."

The retro version of the Air Jordan 11 was a highly sought-after shoe because of the design and the fact that the original was released in 1996 when Jordan and the Bulls were at the height of their dominance.

Pulver said they were a "defining shoe in Jordan's career."

Other disturbances reported at stores in places like Kentucky and Nebraska ranged from shoving and threats to property damage.

In Taylor, Mich., about 100 people forced their way into a shopping center around 5:30 a.m., damaging decorations and overturning benches. Police say a 21-year-old man was arrested.

In Toledo, Ohio, police said they arrested three people after a crowd surged into a mall.

In Lithonia, Ga., at least four people were apparently arrested after customers broke down a door at a store selling the shoes. DeKalb County police said up to 20 squad cars responded.

In Northern California, two men were arrested at a Fairfield mall after crowds shoved each other to get in position for the Nikes, police said.

In Stockton, Detective Joe Silva said a person was taken into custody at Weberstown Mall on suspicion of making criminal threats involving the shoes. Police also were investigating an attempted robbery in the mall's parking lot. The victim was wrongly believed to have just purchased Air Jordans.

In Tukwila, Officer Murphy said the crowd was on the verge of a riot and would have gotten even more out of hand if the police hadn't intervened.

About 25 officers from Tukwila and surrounding areas responded. Murphy said police smelled marijuana and found alcohol containers at the scene.

"It was not a nice, orderly group of shoppers," Murphy said. "There were a lot of hostile and disorderly people."

The Southcenter mall's stores sold out of the Air Jordans, and all but about 50 people got a pair, Murphy said.

Shoppers described the scene as chaotic and at times dangerous.

Carlisa Williams said she joined the crowd at the Southcenter for the experience and ended up buying two pairs of shoes, one for her and one for her brother. But she said she'll never do anything like it again.

"I don't understand why they're so important to people," Williams told KING-TV. "They're just shoes at the end of the day. It's not worth risking your life over."

Make Your Own Smoked Salt or Vanilla Sugar for a DIY Gift Your Friends Will Love [Food]

Make Your Own Smoked Salt or Vanilla Sugar for a DIY Gift Your Friends Will Love If you're participating in a Secret Santa or gift exchange of any type this year, we have some great suggestions, but if a DIY gift is more your style, consider making some vanilla sugar or some smoked salts. They're easy to make, keep well, and both pack a lot of flavor in relatively small bottles. Your coworkers and friends will thank you.

Vanilla sugar is surprisingly easy to make. You'll need vanilla bean pods, sugar, a bottle to keep it all in, and about 2 weeks to let the flavors develop, that's about it. Smoked salt takes a little more effort, and requires you to head out to the grill to make it, but once you've made some for yourself, you won't be able to resist making some to share with your food-loving friends. In both cases, a few ingredients and a little cash go a long way towards some fancy, fast DIY holiday gifts that any home cook or food fan will enjoy.

Are you planning to hit the kitchen for a batch of delicious DIY goodness this holiday season? Share what's cooking in your house in the comments below.

AIDS Research Holds Promise for Reducing HIV Transmission Rates (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Dec. 1 (HealthDay News) -- The data may at first seem dire: More people are living with HIV/AIDS than ever before in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

But researchers say that's actually good news because people are living with the disease through effective medical treatment, rather than dying from its relentless progress.

But even better news comes in the form of potential new treatments that could keep people from acquiring HIV in the first place -- progress that will be noted Dec. 1 as countries around the world mark World AIDS Day.

"AIDS research has brought us some extraordinary advances over the past couple of years," said Kevin Robert Frost, chief executive of amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research. "When you take all that and combine it with the other preventive measures we know of, we have this phenomenal toolbox at our disposal for radically reducing transmission."

These advances include new ways to prevent transmission, as well as growing evidence that early and effective treatment of HIV in those already infected actually prevents the virus from spreading to others.

Some researchers are even beginning to become excited about the prospects of finding the holy grail of AIDS research -- an actual cure for the dread disease.

"Every day . . . I hear growing enthusiasm [that] we can cure this disease," Frost said. "We think it's possible. We think we could get there."

According to the CDC's most recent tally, more than 1 million adults and children in the United States were living with HIV in 2008. That's an increase of about 7 percent from the agency's previous estimate, made in 2006. Experts at the CDC say the increase is a good sign that disease management is working, but they also point out that more people are becoming infected with HIV than are dying from HIV or AIDS.

Another sign of progress involves the transmission rate of HIV. The CDC estimates that for every 100 people living with HIV, just five end up transmitting the disease to someone else. That's an 89 percent decline in the estimated rate of HIV transmission since the epidemic's peak in the mid-1980s.

The new research that promises to reduce HIV transmission even further includes:

  • Evidence that effective treatment prevents transmission. In a government study, called HPTN 052, "it became very clear that people who received early treatment [with antiretroviral medications] had a 96 percent decline in the likelihood they would infect their uninfected partners," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
  • Development of medication that prevents acquisition of HIV. Another series of studies focused on the use of medications to make a person less likely to acquire HIV, known as PrEP, or pre-exposure prophylaxis. The studies found that non-infected gay or bisexual men who take antiretroviral medications daily are much less likely to become infected. "Basically, it's a pill that could prevent HIV acquisition in gay men if taken once a day," said Frost, noting that one combination drug therapy called Truvada appears to cut HIV transmission by 44 percent.
  • Topical prevention for women. Experts say that a woman's chances of acquiring HIV can be reduced through the use of a topical microbicide. One study at Columbia University identified a gel containing a small amount of tenofovir, an antiretroviral medication, that reduced women's risk for HIV infection by 39 percent and risk for genital herpes by 51 percent.
  • Male circumcision. Research also has found that circumcised males are as much as 60 percent less likely to acquire HIV, Fauci said. This has led world health leaders to consider promoting circumcision as prevention, particularly in third-world countries.
  • Vaccine research. A long-standing quest of AIDS researchers, the development of a potential HIV vaccine, has continued, Fauci said. The largest-ever HIV vaccine trial, conducted in Thailand, reported in 2009 that people who received the vaccine were 31 percent less likely to acquire the virus. "It certainly is not ready for prime time, but it is evidence that we can protect through vaccination," Fauci said.

All of this progress has led researchers to dare to dream of what was once unthinkable -- discovering an actual cure for HIV/AIDS.

"New interest is growing around the concept of trying to cure HIV and AIDS," Fauci said. "Ultimately, get these patients off therapy so they can lead normal lives again."

However, he cautioned that talk of a cure should not be taken as a sign that doctors are near the goal. "This is an aspirational hope," he said. "We don't yet have exciting results."

Frost is concerned that the pace of these advances could flag in coming years as medical research reels from the impact of the global recession.

"The challenge is, it's all happening against the backdrop of the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression," Frost said. "We really need people to support these efforts if we're going to make a difference. Unfortunately, we're victims of our own success. As AIDS becomes more and more a chronic but manageable disease, a lot of the urgency is lost."

YouTube goes under the knife, new homepage and social integration emerge (video)

Falling into lockstep with Google's quest to redesign everything, YouTube today officially unveiled a radical new look for its twenty billion strong video site. Now sporting a more somber look, the homepage is now dominated by a center feed hosting content, which is flanked on its left by a list of channels in a quasi-navigation bar. Besides hosting channels, that navbar also features Google+ and (opt-in) Facebook tabs, allowing you to peruse content friends are sharing and interacting with. Also tweaked are channels, which are now more easily customizable thanks to the addition of snazzy new templates. To our eyes the whole shebang looks like a well-oiled augmented Cosmic Panda coupled with some slick social integration, but don't take our word for it, a video explaining the changes awaits you after the break.

UK: Iran faces 'consequences' for embassy attack

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron said Iran's failure to defend the British embassy from an attack in Tehran was a disgrace that will have serious consequences.

Cameron called the storming of the embassy in Tehran on Tuesday "outrageous and indefensible."

Iranian protesters stormed two British Embassy compounds, smashing windows and burning the British flag during a rally to demonstrate against sanctions imposed by Britain, live Iranian television showed.

The prime minister said all embassy staff have been accounted for and praised Britain's ambassador to Iran for handling a "dangerous situation with calm and professionalism."

Cameron said the Iranian government will face "serious consequences" for "its unacceptable failure" to protect diplomats in line with international law.

He said those measures will be considered in the coming days, adding that Iran's government must immediately secure Britain's compound and ensure the safety of its embassy staff.

Several dozen protesters broke away from a crowd of a few hundred protesters outside the main embassy compound, scaled the embassy gates and went inside. Iranian security forces appeared to do little to stop them.

The demonstrators threw molotov cocktails and one waved a framed picture of Queen Elizabeth apparently found inside the main compound, the state TV showed.

An NBC News cameraman at the scene reported that the protesters tore down the British flag and replaced it with the Iranian flag.

The White House said the United States condemned the incident and urged Iran to prosecute the offenders.

The Associated Press reported that the protesters, numbering in the dozens, were hardline students and that they clashed with riot police.

They chanted, "The Embassy of Britain should be taken over" and "Death to England."

Less than two hours later, police appeared to regain control of the site. But the official IRNA news agency said about 300 protesters entered the British ambassador's residence in another part of the city and replaced British flags with Iranian ones.

Without specifying which compound it was referring to, the semi-official Mehr news agency said embassy employees fled. "They left the building a few minutes ago through the back door," the report said.

The British Foreign Office confirmed the "incursion" by demonstrators and vandalism to embassy property in a statement, and said it was "outraged."

"Under international law, including the Vienna Convention," the Iranian government has "a clear duty to protect diplomats and Embassies in their country and we expect them to act urgently to bring the situation under control and ensure the safety of our staff and security of our property," the statement said.

The Foreign Office said it was in contact with embassy officials. Officials were still checking on the well-being of workers and diplomats, a spokeswoman said on condition of anonymity in line with standing policy.

It later issued a statement calling on Iranian authorities "to act with utmost urgency to ensure the situation is brought under control and to protect our diplomatic compound, as they are obliged to do under international law."

It advised British nationals in Iran to "stay indoors, keep a low profile and await further advice."

New sanctions
The incident followed Britain's imposition of new sanctions on the Islamic state last week over its nuclear program.

London banned all British financial institutions from doing business with their Iranian counterparts, including the Central Bank of Iran, as part of a new wave of sanctions by Western countries.

Iran's Guardian Council approved a bill on Monday to downgrade Iran's ties with Britain, one day after the Iranian parliament approved the measure compelling the government to expel the British ambassador in retaliation for the sanctions.

In parliament in Tehran on Sunday, a lawmaker warned that Iranians angered by the sanctions could storm the British Embassy as they did to the U.S. mission in 1979.

Tensions with Britain date back to the 19th century when the Persian monarchy gave huge industrial concessions to London, which later included significant control over Iran's oil industry.

But they have become increasingly strained as the West accuses Iran of trying to develop nuclear weapons ? a charge Tehran denies.

In recent years, Iran was angered by Britain's decision in 2007 honor author Salman Rushdie with a knighthood.

Rushdie went into hiding after Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini issued a 1989 fatwa, or religious edict, ordering Muslims to kill the author because his novel "The Satanic Verses" allegedly insulted Islam.

The decision shortly after Iran detained 15 British sailors and marines in March 2007 for allegedly entering the country's territorial waters in the Gulf ? a claim Britain denies. The 15 were released after nearly two weeks in captivity.

In 2006, angry mobs burned the Danish flag and attacked Danish and other Western embassies in Tehran in protest to the reprinting of a cartoon deemed insulting of the Prophet Muhammad in the Nordic country's newspapers.
